4.10 Newmarket – THE X O (1.5pt win – 7/2 generally)

Robert Cowell has a solid record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, with those running over 5f on turf in Class 3 or lower company landing eight of their 32 starts for a profit of £33.63 to a £1 level stake at SP. THE X O, the mount of Ryan Moore, is an eight-race maiden on turf, but only went down by half a length when second of nine on soft ground at Doncaster (6f) on his final start for John Ryan last autumn and the drop to 5f for the first time in his career could be the making of him.

4.15 Ripon – LORD PROTECTOR (1pt win – 11/2 bet365)

LORD PROTECTOR needs a trip of 1m2f or shorter on a right-handed track and his record under such conditions stands at 11164152160 (5-11) for a profit of £25.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (he’s 0-12 left-handed when racing over 1m-1m2f). In Class 3 or lower company his record improves to 11112 (4-5), with the defeat by a neck at odds of 8-1. The obvious concern is that all those runs came when trained by Ralph Beckett but nine of his ten runs for current handler Ruth Carr have come on left-handed tracks and the other over 1m4f at today’s right-handed venue, a trip he doesn’t stay.

16:15 Ripon “Cock O’ The North” Handicap

4.30 Cheltenham – SOMESPRING SPECIAL (2pt win – 7/4 bet365)

SOMESPRING SPECIAL is appropriately named as she tends to peak at this time of year. The seven-year-old was well supported when making a winning debut for the Hobbs and White yard at Wincanton recently, scoring by seven lengths from JARAMILLO (winner since)in the Cheese & Cider Night 16th April Handicap Chase to take her record in the March to May period to 3111151 (5-7), with the third place at 33-1 in novice hurdle company on her final run for a handicap mark. She jumped out to her left on occasions at Wincanton and should have even more to offer now returned to a left-handed track. She won this race last year when trained by Anthony Honeyball and has Lime Drop – form figures of 91112122111 (7-11) when running against her own sex in Class 3 or lower company after a recent run – to beat.

16:30 Holland Cooper Mares’ Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
