3.05 Ascot – DAIQUIRI BAY (0.5pt e/w – 22/1 bet365, 20/1 William Hill, 18/1 generally)
This century, Alan King is 11 from 72 with his handicappers on the Flat at Ascot (all meetings not just Royal Ascot) for a profit of £22.70 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 6.81, A/E = 1.61). Sixteen of the 32 runners at Royal Ascot finished in the top six (three winners) and DAIQUIRI BAY looks interesting from a favourable high draw in the King George V Handicap. The son of New Bay was a comfortable reappearance winner from off the pace at Chester last month and the steady pace was against him when a neck second in a small field at Doncaster last time. The step up to 1m4f is likely to suit and Rossa Ryan is a good booking.
4.20 Ascot – SWEET WILLIAM (1pt e/w – 9/1 generally)
SWEET WILLIAM has proved somewhat difficult to win with of late, but John and Thady Gosden’s consistent six-year-old has been a friend to each-way backers over the years and last month’s one-length third to Rebel’s Romance in the Yorkshire Cup took his career score to 2221112233132123 (5-16). He has plenty of course form to his name, finishing third to Kyprios in this race 12 months ago and chasing home the same rival in the British Champions Long Distance Cup last October. With no Kyprios to worry about this year it’s hard to see him finishing outside of the first three and, if on a going day he might just get his head in front again.
6.10 Ascot – NEVER SO BRAVE (1pt e/w) & HOLGUIN (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 Paddy Power, 22/1 Sky Bet)
NEVER SO BRAVE only went down by a nose when we were on at Chester 19 days ago and probably should have won. Andrew Balding’s four-year-old, who was having his first start since a gelding operation and first since leaving the care of Sir Michael Stoute, raced keenly and met trouble, allowing Myal to get first run. He’s gone up 4lb for that but looks a Group horse in a handicap and I like his high draw.
HOLGUIN caught the eye when third in the Myal/Never So Brave race at Chester, doing well to finish three-quarters of a length behind the winner under a patient ride from a poor high draw. That was his first run in Britain since his fourth place in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood in August 2023 and, while arguably best on slower ground, he did finish a solid 33-1 sixth of 15 on fast ground in the 2023 Jersey Stakes when trained by Andrew Balding.
