6.30 Newcastle – DARK KESTREL (1pt e/w 12/1, three places, Sky Bet are offering four places but are only 15/2)
DARK KESTREL is very consistent when racing over the minimum trip of 5f on the all-weather, recording form figures of 32021313443243 (2-14). Antony Brittain’s five-year-old struggled to see out the 6f trip when only fifth in a Class 4 handicap here last Saturday but the drop in trip looks ideal and I’m not concerned about the step up to Class 3 level, as the likely stronger gallop will suit. 8.30 Newcastle – CONQUEST OF POWER (1pt win – 4/1 bet365)
CONQUEST OF POWER clocked a very fast time for the grade when second by a head to King Of Speed in an 8.6f handicap at Wolverhampton on February 10th and went one better over 1m at Lingfield in re-applied cheekpieces at Lingfield next time. Tonight’s cut back to 6f on a straight course is likely to put off plenty of his prospective backers but he ran second over course and distance six days before the King Of Speed race and the forecast strong headwind (gusting at up to 46mph) is going to help, as he’s usually ridden patiently.
