4.30 Ludlow – 1pt win – MOSTLY SUNNY (7/1 bet365)
MOSTLY SUNNY has hardly set the world alight in three runs since handicapping but the step back up to 2m5f could suit and he’s worth a small interest. Dan Skelton’s six-year-old recorded his best effort when a modest second over course and distance in novice hurdle company back in October and his three handicap runs have all come over trips of about 2m, two of them on unsuitably slow ground. His last-time out 45-length seventh of eight at Exeter won’t get many punters’ pulses racing but the time was fast, and it was encouraging to see the 28-length sixth go close at Exeter the other day. He’s not far behind Nicky Henderson’s KADO DE JOIE on Proform’s speed figures but was a much bigger price at the time of writing.

7.00 Newcastle – PADDY’S DAY (1pt win – 5/1 William Hill, 4/1 bet365)
I had expected the 5f Class 3 handicap run at Newcastle on February 20th to be set up for a closer, as there were a few pace angles in the ten-runner line-up and a strong wind to contend with. However, PADDY’S DAY (stall 2) held on to score at odds of 8-1 after racing prominently and getting no cover from the wind. The next three finishers came from midfield or further back, with the two other prominent racers – 11-2 shot MON NA SLIEVE and 15-2 chance SPARTAN ARROW – dropping away to finish seventh and ninth respectively. The last-named was beaten by almost nine lengths but came out to score in the same grade at Wolverhampton on his next outing. Paddy’s Day has won just one of his 20 starts on turf but is five from 16 on the all-weather for a profit of £17.75 to a £1 level stake at SP. At Newcastle only, his form figures are 1427111 (4-7) for a profit of £23.25 and he can follow up tonight.
