2.40 Wetherby – IT’S MAISY (1pt win – 6/1 bet365)
IT’S MAISY wasn’t beaten by far in third at Haydock last time when a recommendation in this column, taking her record in handicap company aside from seasonal debuts to 112213 (3-6). Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith’s mare caught the eye when going down by only sixth lengths in sixth at Uttoxeter on her reappearance at a time when yard was struggling, and January is the time to get with their runners. Since 2014, the score is 65 from 287 (22.7%) with January runners (prior to yesterday’s racing at Catterick where they had five runners) for a huge profit of £150.07 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 42.10, A/E = 1.54). She looks a likely improver for the switch to fences and is worth a small interest.

3.31 Newcastle – RAINBOW NEBULA (1pt win – 2/1 bet365)
RAINBOW NEBULA clocked a useful time when a two-length third over course and distance on last month’s racecourse debut, staying on well in the first-time visor after a slow start. Richard Fahey’s first-time visored runners are always of interest on their next start (whether the visor is retained, left off or replaced with other headgear), especially when returned to the track within four weeks of their latest effort. Since the spring of 2016, the score is 14 winners from 70 qualifiers (20% strike-rate) for a profit of £56.88 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 7.50, A/E = 1.87). Showhound was a 33-1 winner on this angle at Newcastle earlier this month and Rainbow Nebula might be able to follow suit.
7.00 Southwell – BOWOOD (1pt win – 5/1 bet365)
The Ivan Furtado-trained BOWOOD, winner of three of his 11 starts on turf, is a 13-race maiden on the all-weather but twice went close over this evening’s course and distance before a modest fourth of six when 5-2 favourite at Lingfield. His latest effort is safely ignored as he raced on the ‘dead’ rail throughout, and the market looks to have over-reacted to his latest run.
