5.25 Beverley – ARIE GORDYE (1pt win – see below for price details)
ARIE GORDYE beat only a couple home when 250-1 for a 1m maiden at Newcastle last October but that was hardly surprising given her massive SP, the lack of previous racecourse experience and the standard of the opposition – the first three home were owned by Godolphin, Juddmonte and Godolphin. Adrian Nicholls’ filly took a massive step forward when a 250-1 fourth of 11 over the same trip at Southwell the following month, doing second best of the prominent racers when it helped to come from off the pace. The trio that beat her are now rated 100, 80 and 87 and the seven-length fifth, a 16-1 winner at Nottingham on his three-year-old debut earlier this month, is now rated 73. Her third start – a 40-1 last of nine over 7f at Newcastle – is easily forgiven as she was very keen on the front end in a race set up for the closers and it looked to be a case of getting a handicap mark before her winter break. She makes her turf/handicap debut over 1m2f off a mark of just 63 and is worth a speculative punt. It’s difficult to know what to do as regards taking a price – at the time of writing (7.10am) she was 10-1 best with the firms but 23-1 to back on Betfair, so taking Betfair SP or a price with the firms later this morning when they fall into line with the exchanges (ideally with a best odds guaranteed concession) is likely best.
6.55 Chelmsford – FLAG OF ST GEORGE (1.5pt win – 3/1 bet365, 888sport, 11/4 generally)
FLAG OF ST GEORGE could only finish fourth of 12 when 6-1 for a 1m Class 4 handicap here last month but his running style (“prominent, pressed leader over 1f out”) put him at a major disadvantage. The first three finishers were described as “midfield”, “midfield” and “towards rear” and the front-running fifth, Benacre, very nearly won at Musselburgh next time when recommended in this column. The cut back to 7f and drop to Class 5 level are both in his favour and he has the early speed to get across from stall 8 of 9.

Andrew’s Angles – How to Find Early-season Profits with Two-Year-Olds
With Cheltenham and Aintree behind us I’m going to turn my attention to the Flat turf season and attempt to identify some profitable angles. Two-year-old races can be a turn-off for punters at this time of year as we’re usually dealing with a host of unraced horses but there are plenty of winner-finding angles… Foaling…
