2.25 Taunton – MR ZEE (1pt e/w – 9/1 William Hill, 8/1 888sport, 15/2 generally)

Grenadier Jed (top price 11-10), an easy winner over course and distance on his handicap hurdle debut earlier this month, holds obvious claims but I’d rather back MR ZEE each-way, despite his 11-race maiden status over hurdles. Michael Blake’s eight-year-old, a six-time winner on the Flat, ran a solid 16-1 fourth of 17 over 1m7f at Wincanton on January 16th, going down by just over seven lengths. The time was fast, and the race is working out well, with the winner finishing second off an 8lb higher mark at Huntingdon next time, the runner-up going down by a neck off a 3lb higher mark (also at Huntingdon) and the third, Just Aidan, scoring by five lengths at odds of 5-2 at Lingfield. The step up to 2m3f is a slight concern but he did run fourth of 15 when 50-1 at Exeter in October and his patient style should ensure that he challenges wide on what is usually the better ground.

4.20 Ludlow – SACRE COEUR (1pt win – 3/1 William Hill, bet365)

The key to SACRE COEUR is getting an easy lead and that’s what happened over 2m4f here last week when Dan Skelton’s mare made all to score by nine lengths. That took her chase record at this venue to 121 (2-3) and another soft lead looks likely in this five-runner contest. Ludlow’s fences take some jumping and backing last-time out Ludlow chase winners when they bid to follow up in another chase, regardless of venue, would have found 31 winners from 117 bets since the beginning of 2022 (26.5% strike-rate) for a profit of £25.80 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 24.32, A/E = 1.27). Those who returned to Ludlow were eight from 18 in the same period (44.4%) for a profit of £10.16. POST CHAISE also qualifies on this angle and could be the one for the forecast. His record right-handed in handicaps stands at 111P23111 (6-9) for a profit of £40.13 to a £1 level stake at SP.
