12.12 Southwell – DESERT MASTER (1pt win – 6/1 bet365)
The wide draw (stall 6 of 8) contributed to DESERT MASTER’s defeat at Wolverhampton last time, but the left-handed track wasn’t helpful either and Antony Brittain’s four-year-old will be happier back over Southwell’s straight 5f today. His full record over a straight 5f on Tapeta reads 04120101 (3-8), improving to 121 (2-3) when drawn in stall 1, with the defeat by three-quarters of a length at 18-1. He has the stall 1 draw again today and is stable is in fine form. I’ve saved on BASHOLO – his prominent style was no help at Wolverhampton last time and he has a good record immediately following a defeat.

2.25 Wincanton – WHAT U WANNA DO IS (1pt win – 11/1 bet365)
WHAT U WANNA DO IS was a big eyecatcher in the Dr Peter Hennis “National Hunt” Maiden Hurdle at Exeter on January 13th, keeping on into a never-nearer fourth at 250-1 and emerging clear best of those ridden patiently. The time was fast – she has the best last-time out figure according to Proform’s ratings – and Ben Lund’s five-year-old looks capable of landing this handicap hurdle off an opening mark of just 92. The step up from an extended 2m to 2m4f looks sure to suit.
6.30 Chelmsford – HEARTRATE (1pt win – 8/1 bet365)
This 0-50 classified contest wouldn’t be the type of race that I usually tackle but I want to have a small interest on Mark Loughnane’s HEARTRATE after his seventh of eight in an amateur riders’ handicap at Kempton last time. I bet the five-year-old that day, who is usually ridden patiently, as it looked as though there would be a pace collapse (they usually go too fast in amateur riders’ races) but I failed to take into the importance of the draw. It did indeed pay to come from off the pace but the first three were drawn 1,2 and 3 of 8 and Heartrate was always caught wide from stall 7. Collusion, the 13-8 favourite for that 6f contest, also challenged wide and he came out to win at 10-1 at Wolverhampton on Tuesday night. Stall 9 isn’t totally ideal tonight, but the big field is likely to lead to a decent gallop and the switch to classified company for the first time will help.
