1.00 Doncaster – STAR VANTAGE (1pt win – 7/4 bet365)

STAR VANTAGE found only stablemate Edgewell too good at Southwell 72 hours ago, going down by two and a half lengths and pulling 17 lengths clear of J P McManus-owned 9-4 favourite Jongleur d’Etoiles. He didn’t race as wide as the winner (which was an obvious advantage on ground that was badly poached on the inside) and it’s interesting to see him out again so quickly. The Rebecca Menzies-trained eight-year-old is now an 18-race maiden but he’s only had five runs for his current yard, starting at double-digit odds in four of them and he can get off the mark in what looks a weak race. Backing hurdlers in Britain during the month February who had the benefit of a very recent outing (six days or less) is a profitable exercise, with those who finished in the top four last time landing 49 of their 116 starts since 2012 (42.2% strike-rate) for a profit of £48.07 to a £1 level stake at SP.

2.55 Huntingdon – WHAT’S ONE MORE (1pt win – 10/1 bet365)

The Emma Lavelle-trained WHAT’S ONE MORE went into my tracker after her 16-1 third of 16 in a Warwick bumper on her debut at the start of last season, doing second best of those to come from off the pace. The patiently-ridden winner Let It Rain followed up in a Listed bumper at Ascot, has since won over hurdles and is now rated 120. She probably found the race coming too soon when only seventh of 12 at Ludlow four weeks later but bounced back to win a Huntingdon mares’ bumper in late January 2024 on the back of a 50-day break. The daughter of Mount Nelson reportedly ran too freely when fourth at Uttoxeter on her hurdles/seasonal return, though her patient style was at a huge disadvantage (the first three finishers raced in the first three throughout) and it was a very encouraging effort in the circumstances. Like last season, she disappointed on her second outing when brought back to the track relatively quickly (24 days), finishing last of three at Lingfield (albeit when a 10-1 shot behind runners now rated 128 and 119), and the switch to handicap hurdle company after a 50-day break is likely to bring improvement, especially off a lowly mark of just 102. Her in-form handler has a fine record with handicap hurdle debutants, scoring with 45 of the 262 qualifiers this century (17.2% strike-rate) for a profit of £57.63 to a £1 level stake at SP. Last year was a poor one for this system (one winner from 20 runners) but both qualifiers have won so far in 2025 (22-1 and 10-1) and the six-year-old can keep the ball rolling.
