3.00 Ludlow – LIGHTNINGUPYOURDAYS (1pt win – 11/1 bet365, 17/2 William Hill)

With the prevailing good ground a possible problem where short-priced favourite Wendigo is concerned the value bet is Alastair Ralph’s LIGHTNINGUPYOURDAYS. The five-year-old has shown ability in three bumpers and a Uttoxeter maiden hurdle, doing best of the hold-up horses when a 25-1 fourth in the latter contest. He too might prefer more juice in the ground, but he’s available at 8-1+ as opposed to evens and his yard is in fine form, sending out four winners (17-2, 8-1, 6-1 and 3-1) from just nine runners in the past fortnight. The booking of Jonathan Burke is another positive – he’s seven from 22 (+£35.10 to a £1 level stake at SP) when riding for this yard at Ludlow.

3.27 Newbury – I’D LIKE TO KNOW (1pt win – 4/1 bet365, 7/2 generally)

This 2m4f Class 3 handicap chase typically goes to a young horse who was making its seasonal debut. Since the race’s inception in 2016, backing all those aged seven or younger who had been rested for 150 days or longer would have found six winners from 24 bets for a profit of £23.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. There were no qualifiers in 2022 and the sole qualifier in the only blank year – Nestor Park in 2020 – ran second at 33-1. Those who fit the bill this year are I’D LIKE TO KNOW, Masaccio and High Treason, with preference for the first-named who has plenty of chase experience, winning two of his four starts, and is proven when fresh. Chris Gordon’s seven-year-old, an easy winner at Kempton in early May when we last saw him, likes today’s venue, finishing first and second by a short head from his two course visits.
