1.30 Chester – COPPER KNIGHT (1pt e/w – 10/1 BetVictor & Boylesports, both four places, 9/1 generally) & 0.5pt e/w ANGEL SHARED (9/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
The past ten renewals of this 5f handicap have gone to runners drawn in stalls 1, 2, 3 or 4 and backing all 40 qualifiers would have returned a profit of £29.00 to a £1 level stake at SP or £43.62 at Betfair SP after 2% commission (expected winners = 6.17, A/E = 2.17). Those drawn 5 or higher were 0-59 (expected winners = 3.56). Cases can be made for all four of the qualifiers and I imagine backing all four each-way with the firms paying four places will pay dividends. The first one I’ve settled on for the purposes of this column is 11-year-old COPPER KNIGHT (stall 3 of 12), trained by in-form Tim Easterby. He proved that he was no back number when a 20-1 third from a difficult draw at Beverley on his comeback and he has placed in this race twice previously, including a neck second last year. It’s worth taking a point under the best price if necessary to secure that extra place concession.
The other bet in the race is ANGEL SHARED (stall 4) who tends to run well at this time of year. Steph Hollinshead’s filly took her record in the spring or autumn to 411123 (3-6) when a best-of-the prominent-racers third at Beverley last time. The fourth place came when running green at 50-1 on her racecourse debut. Her trainer has yet to saddle a winner here since her name was on the family licence (0-27) which tempers confidence slightly, but I still want an interest.
2.05 Chester – GO VICTOR (0.5pt e/w – 40/1 generally)
With the front two in the betting for this 5.5f maiden coming out of stalls 13 and 12 (of 13) we could be in for an upset. Step forward GO VICTOR (stall 6) who looks worth a speculative punt despite only finishing a five-length seventh of eight at Pontefract on last month’s debut. That experience would have been needed, he was weak in the market and the race is working out strongly, with the second/fourth winning at the next time of asking. The Stella Barclay yard is in good form and he’s better berthed than the market principals.
4.10 Chester – FOURONEOHFEVER (1.5pt win, 7/2 bet365, 100/30 William Hill)
FOURONEOHFEVER could only finish 11th of 16 at Doncaster last time out but the strong winds made life difficult for his prominent style and his six-length defeat was a good effort in the circumstances. We’ve already backed the tenth from that race – Asgard’s Captain – who was only half a length ahead of Fouroneohfever and bolted up at Epsom next time. George Boughey’s four-year-old is nicely drawn in stall 3 for this 1m2f handicap and has won on both previous course visits.
