11.58 Lingfield – EPSOM FAITHFULL (1pt win – 3/1 bet365)
EPSOM FAITHFULL didn’t step up beyond 1m until her 42nd career start, causing a 100-1 shock in a 1m2f handicap at Lingfield in November. She finished a solid 11-1 second to the William Haggas-trained Santorini Star over the same track and trip next time and might have given the winner more of a race had she not been denied a clear passage. Pat Phelan’s mare has won eight of her 24 all-weather starts for a profit of £127.45 to a £1 level stake at SP – a healthy return even with the 100-1 win taken out. In Class 3 or lower handicap, in fields of 11 or fewer runners, when returned to the track within 90 days, her all-weather record becomes 152111195117012 (8-15) for a profit of £136.45. Her patient style should ensure that she’s switched off the ‘dead’ inside rail (riding deeper than ever during the current freezing spell) and Vibrato is likely to set a reasonable gallop.

6.30 Chelmsford – OSCAR DOODLE (0.5pt e/w – 66/1 bet365)
OSCAR DODDLE was poorly campaigned when trained by Brian Ellison, often running at Newcastle – the all-weather track closest to his yard – despite his prominent running style being disadvantaged on the round course at that venue. He ran at Chelmsford on two occasions for his old yard, scoring over 1m2f at 18-1 in the first of them (May 2023) before a comfortable win over the same trip (August 2023) when heavily backed (tipped in this column). His ten subsequent all-weather outings have all come on Tapeta, including in four goes for current handler Olly Williams, and he’s worth chancing to bounce back to form now that he finally returns to his favourite venue, albeit over this longer trip of 1m6f.
