3.45 Ayr – GOLDEN POINT (1pt win – 7/2 William Hill, 3/1 generally)
GOLDEN POINT got off the mark in a 2m4.5f mares’ novices’ hurdle here last month, scoring narrowly from Just Her Type who runs in the 1.55 at Lingfield today. That form was boosted when seven-length third Vroomoz Eile won at Carlisle next time and the step up to 3m look sure to suit. The six-year-old clearly likes this venue – her two bumper runs here produced a debut two-length fourth of 15 and an 11-1 second – and I like the booking of Conner McCann. The stable conditional has a 13 from 64 record for his boss (20.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £22.85 to a £1 level stake at SP, improving to 13 from 54 (24.1%, +£32.85) in hurdles and bumpers only.

8.30 Wolverhampton – CRYSTAL MARINER (1pt win – 17/2 William Hill, 8/1 bet365)
Stall 1 is going to make life difficult for hold-up performer Wonder, the 15-8 favourite at the time of writing for his 1m4f handicap, as he’s going to end up on the inside rail where the Tapeta surface is often slower than the middle of the track. Since the spring of 2016, backing stalls 1, 2 and 3 blindly in course and distance handicaps of 8+ runners would have found only 77 winners from 1005 bets (7.7% strike-rate) for a huge loss of £444.22 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners =99.09, A/E = 0.78). Laying the same horses at Betfair SP would have returned a 26.54% profit on turnover after 2% commission. Pace angle Sax Appeal could also end up in the ‘swamp’ from stall 3. I’m going to take a chance on Jamie Osborne’s CRYSTAL MARINER, who might benefit from the presence of Saffie Osborne in the saddle after making the running in the deep stuff under William Carver when drawn in stall 1 at Lingfield last time. We were in ‘dead’ rail territory that day and it was no surprise to see him fade into eighth of the nine runners. The five horses who raced on the inside rail on the first circuit finished fourth (100-30f Therapist), sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth. Fifth-placed Raintown raced wide of the rail, but his prominent style was unhelpful, and he boosted the form with a win earlier this week. Therapist was upped from Class 4 to Class 2 company next time, finishing a close-up 20-1 fourth and the form looks solid for the grade. The five-year-old is 1-1 on Tapeta, landing a Newcastle maiden for Sir Michael Stoute back in 2023, and I’m expecting a more patient ride from his stall 6 of 9 draw tonight.
