DARK THIRTY is tempting here as he won this race last year and he did well to hold on at Doncaster last time after cutting out the early running. However, his record immediately following a win reads 5433 (0-4) and the booking of Ryan Moore will ensure that the price is a point or two shorter than it should be. I prefer the claims of WOODHAY WONDER whose turf record below Listed level reads 1111143 (5-7), improving to 1111 (4-4) at Newmarket only (three wins on the Rowley Mile, in use today). Fast ground suits.
2.25 Newmarket – ALMERIC (1.5pt win – 6/1 bet365, William Hill)
Progeny of Study Of Man are profitable to back blind in turf races on the Flat, landing 37 of their 192 starts (19.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £12.65 to a £1 level stake at SP and the early signs are that they will improve with age…

…ALMERIC, trained by in-form Andrew Balding, was very green on his debut at Sandown last September when a two-length fourth to Prince Of The Seas and got off the mark at York the following month (1m, soft). After that win, his jockey suggested that better ground would suit and her dam, Alvarita, has done well with her offspring on their three-year-olds debuts, especially the ones who raced as juveniles…

Late developers have a good recent record in the Nell Gwyn and simply backing the April/May foals, who were probably behind their rivals physically in their early juvenile starts (if raced at two), would have found five winners from 15 bets since 2018 for a profit of £38.33 to a £1 level stake at SP. SAGUARO BLOSSOM and ARABIAN DUSK are today’s qualifiers, with a speculative chance taken on the first-named despite her seemingly modest debut fifth on the all-weather at Lingfield 18 days ago. Brian Meehan’s filly went into my tracker after that run, as she had the worst of the draw in stall 1 of 12 and raced on the ‘dead’ rail in the early stages. She made ground when switched off the fence but returned to the ‘swamp’ at the business end and her two and-a-half length defeat was a useful effort in the circumstances. She takes a big step up in class on her turf debut, but her trainer does well with second-time out three-year-olds and she could surprise.
