5.45 Newcastle – VOLENTI (1pt win – 8/1 bet365)
The steady early gallop and lack of the usual Newcastle headwind helped those ridden prominently in the 7f handicap won by 33-1 shot Showhound here on January 11th and the late closers had little chance. One of those – Ben Haslam’s VOLENTI – kept on to finish just over three lengths back in sixth of the eight runners and will be happier now returned to tonight’s 1m trip in a bigger field. The six-year-old was a three-time course and distance winner in the final quarter of 2024 and there are a couple of pace angles to tow him into the race.

7.45 Newcastle – SUN KEEPER (1pt win – 16/1 bet365)
I was interested in Streak Lighting in the 7.15, as he fared best of those to come from midfield of further back when runner-up in the same race as Volenti last time, but he’s up against the progressive Brazilian Rose and might have to settle for second or third. I wouldn’t put you off doing a Volenti/Streak Lightning each-way double or place-only double but for my second bet I’ve gone for the Alice Haynes-trained SUN KEEPER in this 7f handicap. The three-year-old daughter of Havana Grey has hinted at ability in a trio of 6f novice contests in the past couple of months and is likely to take a step forward now handicapping for the first time and dropped to 5f. Her trainer does well with handicap debutants on the all-weather, scoring with eight of the 46 qualifiers for a profit of £73.00 to a £1 level stake at SP.

Andrew Mount’s Cheltenham Focus – Spotlight on Stayers’ Hurdle
Having looked at a handicap in my latest Cheltenham column, I’m keeping it simple this week and turning my attention to the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle. I can make an educated guess as to who is likely to turn up for this three-mile Grade 1 contest and by using stats/trends and horse profiling I’m hoping…
