3.20 Epsom – ASGARDS CAPTAIN (1pt win – 6/1 William Hill, 11/2 generally)
ASGARD’S CAPTAIN was only tenth of 16 at Doncaster on last month’s return to turf but raced prominently into the headwind in a 1m2f handicap dominated by the closers (eight of the first nine finishers came from midfield or further back). Dylan Cunh’s five-year-old only scored once on the all-weather over the winter but often raced at Newcastle where his running style was far from ideal. He handles this track, finishing third in the 0-105 Northern Dancer Handicap at last year’s Derby meeting and runs off the same mark in today’s 0-95 contest.
6.43 Hereford – RUSSIAN RULER (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 bet365, three places)
RUSSIAN RULER was best in the spring when trained by Nicky Henderson, recording form figures in the March to May period of 1115PP (3-6), with the two non-completions coming in the Martin Pipe conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle at the Cheltenham festival and the 3m handicap hurdle at the Aintree festival. The eight-year-old has yet to win in four starts for Laura Morgan but hinted at a revival when a 22-1 third at Leicester in January, briefly looking threatening on unsuitably soft going (traded at 11.00 in running from a Betfair SP of 42.45). He had the stuffing knocked out of him by a bad mistake at the first fence at Stratford last time, eventually pulling up, but is worth one more chance.
7.13 Hereford – TAPLEY (1pt win – 8/1 888sport, 15/2 bet365, Paddy Power, William Hill)
TAPLEY has a good record on sharp track and was my pick for the 2m conditional jockeys/amateur riders handicap hurdle at Aintree, where he just missed out on the places, finishing a 50-1 sixth of 17. That was a mammoth effort as he raced prominently in a race set up for the later closers. That run took his record in bumpers/hurdles on sharp tracks to five wins from 14 starts for a profit of £15.25 to a £1 level stake at SP and today’s venue will suit (he was beaten on his sole start here but that was over fences).

Andrew’s Angles – How to Find Early-season Profits with Two-Year-Olds
With Cheltenham and Aintree behind us I’m going to turn my attention to the Flat turf season and attempt to identify some profitable angles. Two-year-old races can be a turn-off for punters at this time of year as we’re usually dealing with a host of unraced horses but there are plenty of winner-finding angles… Foaling…
