8.15 Newbury – MARLAY PARK (0.5pt e/w – 7/1 bet365) & BILLY MILL (1pt win – 10/1 bet365)
Newbury’s straight course often favours early pace but with a forecast headwind and a few pace angles this 7f Class 5 handicap could be set up for a closer. Four-time Epsom winner MARLAY PARK has never won on a straight track but only went down by a neck in second place to even-money favourite Gincident (winner again since) at Leicester (7f) on his reappearance and he fared best of those to come from well in rear when sixth to Partisan Hero in a 7f Class 2 handicap at his beloved Epsom on Oaks Day. Miss Information, the patiently ridden eighth, won the Kensington Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last week to give the form a major boost.
The other interesting one is BILLY MILL who returns to his optimum 7f trip after two runs over 1m. He won off this mark at Kempton in May when last running over this trip and his full record in Class 5 company read 4111 (3-4), with the sole defeat when 12-1 for a 15-runner Newbury maiden on his racecourse debut.
8.50 Newbury – MOJOMAKER (0.5pt e/w – 7/1 bet365)
MOJOMAKER was only fifth of 13 when the 5-2 second favourite for a 6f Class 5 handicap at Chepstow last month but the stands’ side ‘golden highway’ was open for business that day and his stall 3 made life extremely difficult. He was stuck out in the centre throughout but only beaten by two lengths. David Loughnane’s six-year-old finished more than four lengths clear of next low-drawn finisher, seventh-placed Saffredi (stall 1), and that rival improved his RPR (Racing Post Rating) by 14lb when fifth at Windsor next time. The low-drawn runners in stall 2 (+45lb), stall 6 (+35lb) and stall 5 (+39lb) all ran much better in defeat next time after finishing 11th, 12th and 13th respectively while sixth-place Francisco – who raced down the centre despite a good draw in stall 11 – received a 10lb higher RPR when third at Lingfield next time. Mojomaker has a poor wins-to-runs ratio but it will be disappointing if he isn’t thereabouts under Rossa Ryan in the new headgear combination.
