3.50 Hexham – LUCKY SOLDIER (1pt win – 14/1 bet365)
The Nick Alexander-trained LUCKY SOLDIER wouldn’t look an obvious pick for this 3m novices’ handicap chase as he trailed home in 11th place in handicap hurdle company at Doncaster last time and now makes his debut over fences. However, his yard’s chase debutants have a useful record when pitched straight into handicap company, landing seven of their 43 starts since the beginning of 2016 for a profit of £11.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 5.09, A/E = 1.38), with those who ran in a handicap hurdle on their latest outing winning seven from 34 (+£20.00). Perhaps more interesting is that the form of his Doncaster 11th of 14 is working out well, with fast-time winner Jukebox Fury following up at Wetherby last week, runner-up Skin Full and third-placed Ca Plane Pour Moi going one-two at Taunton, fifth-placed Glory Heights finishing second by a head in a field of 16 when 8-1 at Ayr and 12th-placed Lizzie Rey recording a 33-1 win at Southwell. Lucky Soldier was beaten by a long way but his sire’s progeny have a superior strike-rate over fences as compare to hurdles and he’s worth a speculative interest.

4.35 Taunton – CHICAGO STORM (1pt win – 11/2 bet365)
I’m keen to oppose THROUGH THE AGES here as the Moores’ five-year-old has form figures right-handed over jumps of 83857 (0-5) and, more importantly, needs genuinely soft or heavy going. I’m going to side with Daisy Hitchens’ CHICAGO STORM, despite the nagging doubt that he prefers bigger fields (his two hurdle wins have come in fields of 17 and 13 runners). The six-year-old went for home too soon when fifth of 12 at Warwick on his penultimate start and ended up against the far side rail where the ground looked deeper but bounced back to win from off the pace at Stratford, tactics rarely ideal for that venue. His record for his current yard now reads 1251 (2-4) and this track will suit.
8.15 Newcastle – CLOCH NUA (1pt win – Evens bet365)
The headwind, forecast at Newcastle for Monday night/Tuesday morning, is expected to have disappeared by the evening but I still want to side with hold-up performer CLOCH NUA who should get a reasonable gallop to chase courtesy of SAISONS D’OR and ASPIRE TO GLORY. Stella Barclay’s six-year-old won twice over 1m here in January before completing his hat-trick in a 7f handicap at Southwell and looked in need of a break when only fifth at the Nottinghamshire venue a week later. He returned from a month off to score of 1m here on March 6th and that form was boosted by third-placed Broken Spear, who went two places better shortly after. His all-weather record for tonight’s jockey Jason Hart reads 1151 (3-4) and he’ll tuck in from stall 1 to get cover before a late challenge.
