3.52 Newcastle – DARK KESTREL (1pt win – 4/1 bet365)
The absence of the usual Newcastle headwind saw plenty of prominent racers prove successful at last Thursday’s meeting, with the winners described by the Racing Post as “midfield”, “made all”, “pressed leader”, “prominent, led over 3f out”, “raced in second, shaken up and led over 1f out”, “prominent”, “prominent” and “made virtually all”. It certainly paid to be up with the pace in the 5f handicap won by Castan in which the first three were described as “prominent, led over 3f out”, “took keen hold, in touch with leaders” and “led”. DARK KESTREL missed a beat at the start and raced in rear, meeting trouble before keeping on to finish less than two lengths behind the winner in fifth of ten and doing second best of the closers. The wind could be fairly strong and into their faces tonight so, with a couple of pacesetters in opposition, he should have the race run to suit.

4.22 Newcastle – BELLAGIO MAN (1pt win – 7/1 bet365)
Anthony Brittain’s BELLAGIO MAN ducked down just before the stalls opened and was slowly away in the 6f Class 5 handicap at the same Newcastle meeting as stablemate Dark Kestrel last week, leaving him with a mountain to climb in a race dominated by the front-runners. Mersea and Just Ten High disputed the lead throughout, with Bellagio Man doing best of the closers in a half-length third. Blackjack should set to decent gallop and with a headwind likely his running style will be less of a disadvantage today.
