4.15 Fakenham – TOMMIE BEAU (2pt win – 11/4 generally)
TOMMIE BEAU would likely have finished second had he not run out in the cross-country chase at Cheltenham’s November meeting and can be forgiven his three subsequent defeats in December/January as he rarely shows much in the depths of winter, with his tailed-off last of six to L’Homme Presse in the Cotswold Chase taking his record in the December to February period to 0-13. It’s a different story in the warmer months – Seamus Mullins’ ten-year-old has a 14 from 31 record (45.2% strike-rate) from March to November for a profit of £28.20 to a £1 level stake at SP, including form figures in May/June of 111161111 (8-9). The sole defeat can be excused as he was badly hampered. This three-time course winner makes his debut in veterans’ handicap chase company today and looks set to run a big race.
4.30 Ffos Las – ANOTHER FOLLY (1pt win – 7/1 generally)
Since the beginning of 2018, Jane Williams is five from 13 with chasers running in first-time cheekpieces (including those trained in partnership with ex-husband Nick Williams) for a profit of £37.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. Three of the beaten horses finished second or third and one of the two fallers, In Rem, won at odds of 17-2 next time out. Those stats suggest an improved performance from six-year-old ANOTHER FOLLY who looks worth a bet despite his ten-race maiden status. He finished last of four at Plumpton on his latest assignment but was beaten by less than ten lengths and he actually emerges with the best last time out speed figure (according to Proform’s numbers) for that effort.

Andrew’s Angles – How to Make the Best of Racing in May
One recurring theme in the hugely entertaining Barstewards Enquiry podcast concerns trainer Charles Hills and how his runners tend to go off the boil from the end of June. I thought I’d used this week’s column to check this out and to look for other trainers whose runners typically perform well in the first half…
