3.32 Pontefract – FARENHEIT SEVEN (1pt win – 11/2 William Hill, 5/1 generally)
FARENHEIT SEVEN seems equally effective over 5f or 6f, recording form figures in handicaps over the two sprint distances of 31113 (3-5). March Usher’s four-year-old was drawn away from where the action unfolded when third to course expert Paddy’s Day at Newcastle last time and has the early speed to take advantage of his stall 2 draw. Since 2021, backing colts/geldings drawn in stalls 1, 2 or 3 in Pontefract handicaps over 5f-1m2f would have found 101 winners from 573 bets (17.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £16.86 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those with a Proform pace rating of six or higher were 47 from 198 (23.7%) for a profit of £92.73 (expected winners = 35.59, A/E = 1.32). Fahrenheit Seven qualifies on this angle.
7.00 Southwell – DELICACY (1pt win – 12/1 generally)
The early market is headed by 9-4 shot PARTY BEAR but Karl Burke’s three-year-old looks flattered by her last time out Wolverhampton where she was always on the front end and managed to steer well clear of the ‘dead’ inside rail. The first three finishers were described by the Racing Post as…
“Prominent, ridden and led inside final 110 yards, ran on”
“Prominent on inner, pressed leader over 1f out, kept on final 110 yards”
“Led narrowly, headed inside final 110 yards, kept on”
..she’s in stall 1 tonight which is far from ideal, as the inside berth is just 14 from 179 in course and distance handicaps in the past three years (7.8% strike-rate) for a loss of £90.43 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 21.03, A/E = 0.67).
Owners Nick Bradley Racing saddled two runners in this race last year, winning it with 11-1 shot Bellarchi, and they are triply represented this time around with BLUFFERONTHEBUSS, LARCHILL LASS and DELICACY. The first two-named seem happiest on stiff tracks on turf so the bet has to be DELICACY, who will appreciate the cut back to 7f after racing freely over 1m here in her two runs since joining Roger Fell from Richard Hannon. Both came in Class 4 company, and she was a winner on turf for her old yard when last running at tonight’s Class 5 level.
