2.40 Yarmouth – UNITED FORCE (1pt win – 9/2 generally)

This looks like a good race to bet in as there are three horses I don’t think will win. KODEBREAKER is very consistent, and I certainly wouldn’t put you off backing him place only or playing him to finish exactly 2nd or 3rd with the firms offering that option but he needs the comfort of a rail to run against and he has a shockingly poor record when not drawn in stall 1, failing to register a win from 47 attempts (expected winners = 5.37). SPANISH MANE (10-1 at the time of writing) won’t enjoy the soft conditions and though likely to be in receipt of an early lead, looks vulnerable given the forecast headwind, while BEDFORD HOUSE (14-1) is by Dabarism, a sire with a poor record on soft/heavy going. We could back everything else in the race and make a profit if this trio get chinned but putting up nine horses in a 12-runner Class 6 handicap at Yarmouth is likely to get me carted off to the loony bin, so I’ll try to find the winner. UNITED FORCE looks the best alternative. Clare Hobson’s four-year-old was short-headed over course and distance last time and though that run came on good to firm going, today’s soft ground could bring about improvement. The son of Showcasing is bred to appreciate this sort of going and has only encountered it once before, scoring over a straight 7f at Leicester last spring.

4.10 Yarmouth – WATERMELON SUGAR (1pt win – 16/1 bet365, 888Sport)

There’s a stiff headwind forecast at Yarmouth today and with four of the five runners in this 5f handicap likely to go forward the bet has to be WATERMELON SUGAR, the only hold-up performer in the line-up. Chelsea Banham’s five-year-old has a good strike-rate (five from 18) for one who plies his trade at a low level and though all his wins have come at 6f the likely strong gallop, soft ground and headwind will bring his stamina into play.
