8.00 Hamilton – DIGITAL (1pt win – 6/1 bet365) & LADY CELIA (1pt win – 16/1 Paddy Power, Sky Bet)
This 5f Class 5 handicap looks competitive for the grade but DIGITAL (stall 5 of 7) looks the sole pace and is worth a bet in the hope that Jimmy Sullivan elects to race down the middle of the track, rather than to the stands’ side rail which, contrary to popular opinion, is rarely the place to be. The seven-year-old has form figures in Class 5 company of 22151 (2-5), with the latest win coming over course and distance in the corresponding week last year. He disappointed over course and distance last month but he’s 0-12 on turf in April/May and is best judged on turf figures in high summer (June to August) in Class 4 or lower company, of 2218161031 (4-10) for a profit of £13.07 to a £13.047 to a £1 level stake at SP.
The other one to be interested in his LADY CELIA, whose record in 5f handicaps in the June to August period stands at seven wins from 31 starts (22.6%) for a profit of £40.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 3.69, A/E = 1.90), including Hamilton figures of 1123216 (3-7). She’s not ideally berthed in stall 6 but Shay Farmer (2-2 for the Alan Brown yard) will have to pull her wide for a run given her patient style, taking her off the ‘dead’ rail, and she’s 2lb lower than when scoring over course and distance last July.
8.30 Hamilton – HAVANA RUM (1pt win – 5/1 generally)
HAVANA RUM very much caught the eye when a two-length third of eight in a 6f amateur riders’ handicap at Carlisle last month, emerging second best of those to come from off the pace in a race that strongly favoured prominent runners (the winner made all). Richard Fahey’s five-year-old looks set to encounter a decent gallop today – he’s drawn next door to likeliest front-runner VINCE LOMBARDI – and he’s 5lb below his last winning mark. He’s yet to win here but has finished second in two of his three course starts, running sixth in the other with a valid excuse (failed to settle).
