1.50 Newmarket – GALLANT (1pt each-way – 10-1 Sky Bet five places, 11-1 William Hill & Paddy Power, four places)
GALLANT improved for her racecourse debut to win at Kempton last October at the second time of asking where she had subsequent dual Group-race winner WEST ACRE (now rated 114) back in second place. That form has also been well advertised by third-placed SO DARN HOT, whose next five runs produced form figures of 21211 (3-5) and earned him a handicap mark of 93. The fourth, sixth and seventh have also won at least once since (the fifth has yet to run) and the form looks rock solid. We didn’t see GALLANT again until Lingfield last month where the 9-4 shot could only finish fourth of the eight runners. However, she raced on the ‘dead’ inside rail that day rom the worst of the draw in stall 1 (winner/runner-up drawn 6 and 8) and it was a useful effort in the circumstances. She’s yet to encounter slow turf but it should hold no fears on breeding and stall 7 of 14 gives Oisin Murphy options today and trainer Andrew Balding remains in fantastic form.
3.15 Cheltenham – PLANNED PARADISE (1pt win – 8/1 bet365)
I wrote the following piece about PLANNED PARADISE after his Windsor victory in January…
“PLANNED PARADISE arrived late to cause a 25-1 shock in the 3m4.5f Fitzdares Windsor Stayers Handicap Chase by three and a half lengths from FORTUNATE MAN. The Christian Williams-trained nine-year-old, pulled up over 2m5f at Fakenham on his previous outing, clearly appreciated the big step up in trip and the Eider Handicap Chase at Newcastle – a race his trainer won in 2022 and 2023 – could prove to be a suitable target despite this win coming off a mark of just 107. This is generally the time of year to get with his yard’s handicap chasers and had we backed them blind over 2m5f or further from January to May we would have won 47 of our 203 bets (23.2%) for a profit of £99.58 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those aged nine or younger were 43 from 164 (26.2%) for a profit of £116.08.”
The nine-year-old missed the Eider but has run with credit in both subsequent outings, finishing fourth of eight (beaten by four and a half lengths) and a two-length second of four to YES DAY, both at Exeter. He probably doesn’t deserve to be two or three times the price of Yes Day here and is yard is in fantastic form.
3.50 Cheltenham – LONG DRAW (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
LONG DRAW has form figures in handicap hurdle company on left-handed tracks of 122221 (2-6), with the latest victory by five lengths from subsequent Cleeve Hurdle winner Gowel Road over the Pertemps Final course and distance. The right-handed track didn’t suit when fourth in the Wincanton qualifier on Boxing Day and he was unlucky not to get a run in the Pertemps Final last month (he was first reserve). He missed Aintree to wait for this and the recent rain won’t harm his chances.
