5.00 Haydock – CARAMELO RAPIDO (1pt win – 12/1 generally)
This 2m3f handicap hurdle looks set to be run at a sound pace thanks to the presence of front-runners HECOULDBETHEONE, MISS MAVERICK and TYPHOON FLYER. LAND OF MOON is also likely to press the early pace and the hold-up horse who could benefit is Mark Walford’s CARAMELO RAPIDO. The six-year-old caught the eye when a 100-1 six-length third in a good-ground Stratford bumper on his rules debut for Max Young in September, doing best of the closers. He didn’t show much on his first two hurdle runs for his current yard but shaped well when an 80-1 fourth at Carlisle last time and we can expect improvement on his handicap debut.

8.30 Southwell – CHIEF MANKATO (2pt win – 9/4 generally)
Jack Channon’s CHIEF MANKATO got there too soon when third over course and distance on his reappearance in a race that was set up for the late the closers, with the pair who beat him described by the Racing Post as (“towards rear” and “slowly into stride, raced in last”). That was a competitive 0-85 Class 4 handicap featuring two horses rated 87, two on 85, one on 83, two more on 81 and one on 80. Tonight’s race is also a Class 4 contest but it’s only a 0-78 (also open to horses rated 79 and 80) with the 80-rated Chief Mankato topping the weights. The slightly smaller field will suit the son of Sioux Nation and Channon is 44 from 245 with horses aged four or older since taking over the licence from his father (18% strike-rate) for a profit of £74.83 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 31.48, A/E = 1.40). His only other course and distance run saw him finish second by a nose and while a 0-10 record since his debut win is a worry, he looks the value call against main danger WESTMORIAN.
