1.50 York – JM JUNGLE (1pt ew – 10/1 generally)

Three-year-olds are 0-21 in this race in this past ten years, with only one placing, yet two of the three market leaders for this 5f89y handicap are from the classic generation, as are four of the first eight in the betting. Interestingly, JM JUNGLE was the only three-year-old to place in this race in recent seasons, coming home third by half a length last year when best of the nine runners to race on the near side. His three other York runs over 5f-5f89y have produced an 18-1 second of 18, 15-2 fourth of 19 (met trouble in running) and a three-length 11-1 seventh of 17 when poorly drawn. John & Sean Quinn’s four-year-old looks well berthed in stall 6 on the balance of recent evidence and can bounce back from a slightly disappointing run (fifth of 12) at Goodwood last time.

Symphony Group Handicap (Heritage Handicap)

2.25 York – WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE (1pt ew – 18/1 generally)

The Group 3 Acomb Stakes has thrown up some surprise winners in the last ten years, including 25-1 and 16-1 (twice), and backing every runner in this race in that period would have returned a profit of £28.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. The market is dominated by Godolphin’s Ruling Court (evens) and Aidan O’Brien’s The Lion In Winter (2-1) but with Godolphin’s winning debutants not always backing up and the Irish maestro saddling 15 straight losers in this race since landing it with an 8-13 jolly in the year 2000, it could pay to get creative. WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE, a 28-1 winner at Kempton on his debut, ran well on his turf bow at Newmarket next time, doing best of the closers in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes (20-1). He was still green that day and, hopefully, Silvestre De Sousa will have him in a more prominent position from his handy draw in stall 2. I’ve saved on pace angle YAROOGH.

Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (Group 3) (IRE Incentive Race)

3.35 York – ALFLAILA (1pt win – 12/1 generally)

Owen Burrows has a cracking record on the Knavesmire in July/August, scoring with eight of his 18 runners for a profit of £21.50, improving to six from eight in non-handicaps for a profit of £22.75. ALFLAILA has contributed three of those wins, including when getting up close home to deny front-runner King’s Gambit in the Group 2 York Stakes over course and distance last month, to take his course record to 2111 (3-4), with the defeat over an inadequate 7f. King’s Gambit could well frank the form when he runs in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at 3.00 today and Alflaila looks worth a punt to break his Group 1 duck and upset hot favourite City Of Troy, who has yet to impress on the clock.

Juddmonte International Stakes (British Champions Series) (Group 1)
