2.00 Catterick – GLORY FIGHTER (1pt win – 5/1 bet365)

GLORY FIGHTER did too much too soon when fifth of 17 in the 5f Doncaster handicap won by Thunder Star last month, doing well to finish so close. An eight-race maiden on the all-weather, Paul Midgley’s veteran was clearly suited by the return to turf and has been generously dropped 1lb to a mark of 65 for that effort, 2lb lower than when successful at Musselburgh last summer. He has plenty of form over today’s course and distance and Warren Fentiman is a good booking.

2.38 Ludlow – DON’T MIND IF I DO (2pt win – 7/2 888sport, 100/30 Sky Bet, Paddy Power)

MORE COKO’s form figures of 1112 (3-4) look impressive but he was beaten by 20 lengths when the 1-8 favourite at Plumpton last time and his 1-5 Carlisle success on his penultimate start flattered him as he raced wide on the better ground. He could have done with softer going and the first-time hood is a worrying sign. I’m taking him on with DON’T MIND IF I DO, despite him being trained by Alan King. I’m not a big fan of backing the King’s hurdlers as he instructs his jockeys to sit off the pace on the inside rail, even on tracks where it’s blindingly obvious that you need to race prominently and/or wide of the rail where the ground could be badly poached. That was certainly the case in the 1m7f heavy-ground Wincanton novice hurdle won by 16-1 shot Champagne Chic on January 30th. The winner and 4-1 runner-up Ambion View steered clear of the ‘swamp’ throughout whereas Tom Cannon took the rail route on the five-year-old, sent off as the 8-15 favourite. The jolly had to settle for a four-length third behind the two wide runners, but it was a solid effort in the circumstances. He was pulled out of an intended run at Newbury last month because of fast going but today’s ground should be slow enough.
