3.25 Salisbury – JOHN BARLEYCORN (1pt win – 16/1 bet365)

JOHN BARLEYCORN was only 15th of 18 at Newbury on his debut but Eve Johnson Houghton’s colt started at 28-1, failed to settle and ran green. More significantly that was the 6f maiden won by Humidity, a race that has worked out incredibly well, with the winner following up in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot last week and four of the beaten horses also scoring at the next time of asking – Commander’s Intent (85-40), Bourbon Blues (6-4), Morris Dancer (7-4) and Sirius A (4-5). Several others have run well in defeat, including Do Or Do Not, second by a neck (8-1) to the short-priced favourite at York before his 80-1 second to Gstaad in the Coventry Stakes. John Barleycorn was also inconvenienced by his high draw at Newbury and is likely to take a big step forward this afternoon.

3.45 Carlisle – LOVE TALK (0.5pt e/w – 28/1 William Hill)

VERSE OF LOVE heads the market for this 7f Listed contest (11-8 with William Hill) but very soft ground is unlikely to suit the daughter of Siyouni (it’s currently described as ‘good to soft, soft in places’ with rain forecast) and I’d rather take a chance on outsider LOVE TALK, who is better equipped than most to handle the soft conditions. Grant Tuer’s three-year-old is two from two on soft/heavy going over 6f-7f in Britain and will appreciate the cut back in trip after failing to see out 1m3.5f and 1m2f in two runs this season. Her trainer had a torrid time with his turf runners in the early part of the season, recording just one win from 59 runners until mid-June, but has turned the corner since thanks to four winners from 11 runners since June 16th (+£19.00 to a £1 level stake at SP).

8.20 Bath – MY AMBITION (1pt win – 6/1 generally)

MY AMBITION is tactically versatile and, having made all when scoring on firm ground here in May 2023, he could benefit from a forcing Tyler Heard ride in this 1m handicap. Denis Coakley’s six-year-old was only eighth of 13 in a 1m apprentice handicap on the straight course at Newbury in mid-May when we last saw him, but they went too hard up front that day and set it up for the closers. It was also a big advantage to be drawn low, with the winner Marsh Benham (“slowly into stride, in rear”) and runner-up Hover (“towards rear”) coming from stalls 1 and 3 respectively. Newfangled (“in touch with leaders”), best of those to chase the strong early pace in third, has won since, as has sixth-placed Buy The Dip (“prominent, led narrowly over 2f out”). My Ambition, poorly drawn in stall 10 (once adjusted for the non-runner) was described by the Racing Post as “took keen hold, pressed leader” and his eight-length defeat was a respectable effort in the circumstances. Charlie Johnston is seven from 14 in handicaps at Bath and his UNION ISLAND, on a four-timer (including two course and distance wins), will be a big danger. LOVE IS THE LAW is also in my tracker after her Lingfield (turf) third when badly berthed but she has yet to prove her effectiveness on turning tracks.
