2.03 Thirsk – DANDY STYLE (1pt win – 3/1 bet365, 11/4 generally)
DANDY STYLE caught the eye in a 5f Class 2 novice contest on his debut at Carlisle at the end of May, missing a beat at the start before keeping on well to emerge best of the closers in an 18-1 fourth. The winner – Sands Of Spain – and runner-up Better And Better have both won since and Bryan Smart’s colt looks likely to benefit from the step up to 6f in this Class 5 restricted novice contest. Stall 1 is a potential stumbling block, but I’ve reduced my bet accordingly. Given the good record of juvenile newcomers in the Cook Silker Partnership colours I’ll be saving on Richard Fahey’s HORU KANU.
6.20 Epsom – ANNEXATION (1pt win – 11/4 generally)
ANNEXATION is best coming late off a strong pace but was ridden more prominently than usual when going down by a neck under Oisin Murphy at Doncaster last week. The winner and third both came from off the pace that day and it was a fine effort in the circumstances. I can see the logic to the change in tactics as there didn’t look to be much in the way of pace in that 1m2f handicap but it’s a course and distance that eats front-runners alive and it still turned out to be the wrong move. Today’s set-up – an apprentice handicap featuring two regular pacesetters – looks far more suitable and I’m expecting Jack Doughty to sit in the ear before swooping late and wide to victory.
