2.30 Musselburgh – A FINE CLARET (15/2 William Hill, 7/1 generally)

A FINE CLARET wouldn’t be an obvious bet having finished a 26-length last of nine at Carlisle on his debut on June 17th but there are sound reasons to expected improvement. Karl Burke’s son of Unfortunately was sent off as 7-2 joint-favourite for that 6f soft-ground contest and was always struggling after blowing the start and ducking out to his right from stall 8 of 9. He tried to make ground towards the near side rail as they turned into the straight but that was the slowest part of the track and Sam James was very easy on him when it was obvious that he had no chance. His sire’s progeny have a good record on their second career starts (six wins from 30 runners, +£12.20 to a £1 level stake at SP) and Karl Burke has saddled two winners (7-1 and 6-5) and a second (100-30) from four runners on this angle (the other was sixth at 33-1). The fact that he was well supported on his debut suggests that he’d been showing speed at home and the cut back to 5f, better ground and first-time visor could all contribute to an improved performance.

3.15 Thirsk – BEAMING LIGHT (0.5pt ew – 40/1 bet365, Sky Bet, BetVictor)

BEAMING LIGHT was added to my tracker with the following comments after his run in a bumper at Huntingdon last October…

‘BEAMING LIGHT halved in price (20-1 from 40-1) ahead of his debut in the Racing TV ‘Junior’ National Hunt Flat Race at right-handed Huntingdon and Laura Horsfall’s three-year-old showed considerable promise before veering left, running out and unseating Richie McLernon on the home bend. He could go well at likely big odds when switched to a left-handed track.’

He showed precious little at left-handed Doncaster next time (last of 11 at 125-1) and he reportedly was still green when a 250-1 ninth of ten on his Flat debut at Chepstow in late May. I took a chance and backed him to small stakes – win, three and four places – at Nottingham on June 13th where he ran a blinder to finish a 400-1 fifth of ten (beaten by just four lengths) in a 1m maiden, doing best of those to come from off the pace and while we might not see him break him until handicapping, I think he can sneak a place in this 1m novice contest and he’s worth an each-way dabble.
