2.35 Sedgefield – SABBATHICAL (1pt win 9/1 bet365)
SABBATHICAL was off the track for 610 days prior to his modest third of five in a handicap hurdle at Fakenham in December and last month’s 33-1 seventh of nine in a similar race at Ffos Las might also have been needed. Evan Williams’ ten-year-old has a good record when switching from hurdles to fences, recording form figures of 8016111 (4-7) for a profit of £25.88 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those figures improve to 81111 (4-5) over 2m-2m1.5f in Class 4 or lower company, conditions he encounters today. I’ve reduced my intended stake due to the presence of inexperienced conditional jockey Osian Radford but I still want an interest.

3.45 Ludlow – SUPERBOLT (1pt win – 9/4 bet365)
SUPERBOLT took his record for current handler Nigel Twiston-Davies to 22211 (2-5) when scoring comfortably at Leicester last time (2m6.5f, soft) and is unlucky not to be unbeaten in two runs at today’s venue, scoring by just over four lengths on his penultimate start (3m, good to soft) and being left with too much to do by an inexperienced jockey when a three-quarters of a length second (2m4f, good). The drop back to this 2m4f trip is not ideal but the soft ground could compensate and his plenty of his rivals have struggled to jump these tricky fences previously.
5.00 Kempton – KING OF SPEED (1pt win – 9/1 bet365)
Mark Loughnane’s KING OF SPEED has yet to win in three starts at Kempton, but they came over 6f (twice) and 7f and he was often noted as staying on well at the business end. The latest run came when a four-length fifth (7f) last January after being stuck out wide and his last two wins have come over the 8.6f trip at Wolverhampton. His trainer does well over 7f-1m in Class 6 handicaps at Kempton, scoring with 20 of his 99 runners for a huge profit of £124.83 to a £1 level stake at SP.
