3.57 Nottingham – GRAHAM (1pt win – 3/1 William Hill)

It’s very difficult to win from the front in big-field 1m4f handicaps at Ascot and GRAHAM deserves extra credit for his close-up 9-1 third of 11 in a Class 3 contest there last month when always prominent. The pair that beat him were described by the Racing Post as ‘midfield’ and ‘held up in rear’ while the fourth-placed horse was also ridden patiently (‘held up in rear’). Richard Hannon’s four-year-old landed a pair of handicaps over 1m4f on good/faster going last summer and shapes as though the step up in trip to 1m6f will suit. He’ll benefit from the drop down to Class 4 level and is nicely drawn in stall 2.

7.15 Kempton – STAR PUPIL (1pt win – 9/2 with bet365)

STAR PUPIL caught the eye under tend handling when a two-length 16-1 fifth over 6f in Class 2 novice company here on his reappearance and looked in need of the step up to 7f when scoring over the same distance at Wolverhampton next time. His opening mark of 74 doesn’t look overly harsh and he can make a winning handicap debut from a handy draw in stall 4.

7.55 Ripon – ABATE (1.5pt win – 4/1 William Hill)

7.55 Ripon – TWELFTH KNIGHT (0.5pt win – 11/2 William Hill)

ABATE tends to peak at this time of year, recording form figures in June/July of 02174124132011315713321 (8-23) for a profit of £12.72 to a £1 level stake at SP. The eight-year-old did well to finish a 28-1 fifth of 21 from a poor high draw in Class 2 company at York last time and drops down to Class 4 level tonight. His last run in this grade produced a game Newmarket success off a mark of 82 and he’s only 1lb higher. I want to save on TWELFTH KNIGHT, whose course record below Class 2 level stands at 1231 (2-4), with the defeats by a head and half a length.

9.00 Ripon – GEORGIE WOOSTER (1pt win – 15/8 with bet365)

GEORGIE WOOSTER overcame a significant market drift to score at Redcar on last month’s handicap debut when tipped it this column and connections will be happy with a 6lb ratings hike. Tim Easterby’s three-year-old was a big eyecatcher when mid-division at big prices in maiden/novice company and it was very surprising to see him allocated a handicap mark after three starts, as he certainly wasn’t given a hard time by his jockeys. The step up to 1m won’t be a problem and he’ll cope with any rain.
