Sam Turner's Best Bets BlogAidan O'Brien has found the Queen Anne Stakes a difficult race to win in the last decade however LE BRIVIDO (Ascot, 2.30) appears to have been trained with this day in mind since the start of the season and could reverse Lockinge Stakes placings with winner Mustashry.

The selection has four lengths to make up on the Newbury running, but he was poorly drawn that day and a sluggish exit from the stalls didn’t aid his cause either. If there is one track where a slow start can be an advantage then it is on Ascot’s straight mile where patient tactics can often reap rich dividends and Le Brivido’s affinity for the track is already confirmed by victory in the Jersey Stakes two years ago at this corresponding meeting.

BATTAASH (Ascot, 3.40) has been called some rather unkind names during his career, but when he is good he is exceptional and the signs this season suggest he has returned to his outstanding best.

Connections report the five-year-old an easier horse to train this year and the early evidence of an emphatic victory in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock confirmed that view. Admittedly, Battaash was beaten by Ascot specialist Blue Point (3-4 at this venue) in this corresponding race 12 months ago, but the selection used a lot of petrol cutting out the running that day and only succeeded in providing his old adversary with a target to aim for late on.

In the hope he is ridden with a little more restraint today, Charlie Hills’ speedster could gain revenge for that narrow defeat in last year’s renewal and reclaim his billing as one of the world’s premier sprinters.

ELARQAM (Ascot, 5.35) may never live up to the billing which saw him sent off a well-fancied 5-1 shot for last year’s 2,000 Guineas, but his recent Goodwood triumph was certainly a step in the right direction and he appeals as a likely winner of the finale.

The manner of the emphatic two-and-a-half length defeat of Willie John suggested the selection is beginning to find top stride once more after a spell in the wilderness and, if he can build on that display from a decent stalls’ position, he could be difficult to resist here.
