SamTurnerFriday’s finale is a lowly affair but that will not concern BLASTOFMAGIC (Newcastle, nap, 8.15) who has travelled a very long way from Athlone in Ireland in a bid to break his duck.

Handler, Adrian Brendan Joyce has a decent strike-rate with his raiders and very nearly added to the tally with the selection on Wednesday when mugged very close home at Lingfield. Blastofmagic seemed to have done everything right, hitting the front 100 yards out with a decent change of gears but to then prick his ears and come off the gas. That greenness allowed the very fast-finishing winner Something Lucky to take the spoils in an agonising scramble to the line.

It must have been hard to take for connections but the horse will not have many better chances than this and new partner PJ McDonald will be under instructions to keep the horse going all the way to the line.

An hour earlier on the card, TOMMY G (Newcastle, nb, 7.15) gets my next best bet vote and is another to have recently put backers through major trauma. As big as 14/1 over the minimum trip here 10 days ago, the five-year-old hit the front two furlongs out but was caught close home.

His one victory has come over seven furlongs and he returns to that trip this evening.

Charlie Appleby has targeted races with great precision this year and MYSTIQUE MOON (Lingfield, 2.20) can add to the fantastic strike-rate.

Well-backed over a mile here on New Year’s Eve, the pacey four-year-old ended up needing the run after 248 days off. He should appreciate this afternoon’s shorter trip and will also strip fitter.
