The selection may not win many but when in the mood - as he was last week - he travels strongly and gives the opposition plenty to think about. The Hereford victory was particularly taking as he cruised past horses three from home and powered clear after the second last. Clearly connections feel the horse is at the top of his game and they have opted to race again quickly with a 7lb penalty and down a class.
Cougar Kid is fancied to follow up.
It will be a busy night’s action at Chelmsford where RED CYMBAL (Chelmsford, 5.55) and CHAUCER’S TALE (Chelmsford, nb, 8.00) are rated to win their respective races. First to run was well backed to land a novice stakes over course and distance last month but had to dig deep to fend off the second favourite. However, the front pair finished well clear of the rest and the time of the race was decent. The son of Pivotal cost 110,000 guineas as a yearling and should have a bright future.
Chaucer’s Tale has to overcome a big step back up in trip but looks a different horse since he flopped over 1m2f back in May when presumably something was amiss. Given six months off after, he has returned in fine form and stayed on with purpose over 7f to win his first race last Thursday. Unpenalised for that victory in an apprentices’ race, he looks well treated off a mark of just 60.
