It’s day one of Cheltenham’s November Meeting on Friday 15th November and all eyes will be on whether Jonbon can claim victory in the Shloer Chase. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers has taken a look through the form guides and picks out his best bets on the card…
1:10pm Cheltenham – Lycetts Insurance Brokers Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle
We kick off with an opening contest that certainly lacks quality, but it’s a hugely competitive handicap hurdle to start off proceedings and it’s sure to be a tough ask for punters to try and unearth the winner. Neil Mulholland’s winning machine Double Powerful bids for a sixth win on the bounce, but this is toughest test yet, while Fergal O’Brien’s Plaisir Des Flos is another bidding for a six-timer, so has to be respected.
However, there could be some value lying further down the betting and the one that stands out is Irish raider CLOBURY BRIDGE, who was last seen finishing second at Clonmel. Second in a competitive event at the Galway Festival, the eight-year-old was staying on eye-catchingly well in that recent outing, so the step up to 2m 5f plus the uphill finish could bring on significant improvement and off a mark of 112 he looks a decent each-way bet at double-figured odds.

Wed 13 Nov 2024 1:45pm Cheltenham – Mucking Brilliant Paddy Power Novices’ Chase
A small field of four line up for the Listed novices’ chase at 1.45pm and all eyes will be on whether Springwell Bay can follow up a Listed win over fences at Chepstow last time out. Jonjo O’Neill’s raider recorded an eye-catching victory on his first start last season before struggling to kick on, so it could be worth taking him on with Nicky Henderson’s HYLAND, who won well at Cheltenham last month.
Returning to the scene of that victory on Friday, the Seven Barrows raider will be hoping he can replicate that 15-length victory, as he looks to make it three wins from four over fences. He will receive 2lbs from Springwell Bay, which is certainly a bonus, and he could be one that continues to blossom over fences this season and Hyland can land this prize.

2:55pm Cheltenham – Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase
Gordon Elliott’s Conflated is a fascinating runner in the Cross Country, as the former Irish Gold Cup winner and Grade 1 star was last seen finishing way back in the Charlie Hall Chase and a campaign in this unique discipline looks to be the plan now. Undoubtedly, the class act of the race, the Gordon Elliott-trained raider will have to give at least one-and-a-half stone to all his rivals with him carrying 12st and the next in the handicap carrying 10st 5lbs.
With experience thin on the ground, it’s whether you take on the class angle with a better handicapped one. Having not run at his best this season, it’s worth taking on Conflated with TOMMIE BEAU, who was last seen finishing third in the Durham National. Another with a lack of experience over these obstacles, the nine-year-old has shown stamina is his forte, so if he can take to the jumping test then he looks every bit capable of staying on in the closing stages and landing the prize.
