A field of five will go to post for the 2024 CopyBet 1965 Chase at Ascot on Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm and the reigning champion Pic D’Orhy is a hot favourite to retain his crown for Paul Nicholls. Our in-house tipster previews the contest and picks out his 1-2-3 here.
PIC D’ORHY
(Harry Cobden/Paul Nicholls)
One of the most consistent British-trained horses over the last few seasons, Pic D’Orhy may struggle when sent to the highest level, but he showed when winning this race by a whopping 16 lengths last year that he is a top performer at Grade 2 level. Sauntering to victory in a weak renewal last season which saw Shishkin plant himself at the start, the Ditcheat raider should have it all pretty simple again in 2024. Undoubtedly, the best chaser in the field, if he can produce his best form then he’s extremely tough to beat.
Safer Gambling Week 2024
This year Safer Gambling Week runs from Monday 18th to Sunday 24th November, with the intention to educate bettors around the importance of responsible gambling. Mon 11 Nov 2024DASHEL DRASHER
(Rex Dingle/Jeremy Scott)
Jeremy Scott’s Dashel Drasher is certainly in the twilight of his career, but the 11-year-old continues to blossom at the highest level and he reverts back to chasing for this contest. A Grade 2 winner over hurdles last season, the Scott team feel he still has something to give over fences and he was second in the Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase at Aintree a few seasons ago. But, he comes up against a quality rival in Pic D’Orhy here, so he has his work cut out.

He has four value bets across the ITV cards, including a two-point Betfair Chase tip. 1:15 Haydock – Betfair Racing Podcasts Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) (Class 2) (4yo+) – Dans Le Vent 50/1 0.5pt EW 4 places I was…
Thu 21 Nov 2024LE PATRON
(Adam Wedge/Gary & Josh Moore)
A Grade 1 winner of the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown Park last season, Le Patron was last seen pulling up in the Turners Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Still only six, the Gary & Josh Moore-trained raider is open to improvement for his second season chasing, but he will need to recapture the form he showed in the first half of last season to stand any chance of landing a blow on the market leader here.
THE FIELD
Only two other rivals will head to the 2m 5f 8y start and the first of those is Dan Skelton’s Flegmatik, who was last seen finishing a well beaten eighth in the Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Ascot. Now out of the handicap sphere he has more on his plate and is going to be up against it, while Neil Mulholland’s Hidden Depths completes the quintet and he too was seen in the aforementioned Sodexo race at Ascot a few weeks ago, where he finished fifth. That’s a strong handicap contest, but both will have their work cut out against proven Graded winners.
VERDICT
It’s hard to not see a PIC D’ORHY victory, as the hugely consistent performer has been a real class act in Grade 2 company and having sauntered to success in this race 12 months ago then he can do so again. He has to give weight away to all his rivals, but they face an uphill battle here, but it’s the potential improving Le Patron that can bag second place, while the veteran Dashel Drasher can grab the bronze medal.
