Coronation Stakes Tips 2024: Back This Guineas Runner-Up To Storm To Royal Ascot Win

Opera Singer

A plethora of exciting fillies will line up for the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, which takes place on Friday at 3:45pm and all eyes will be on Aidan O’Brien’s hot favourite Opera Singer, who looks the one to beat. However, our man Steve Chambers is taking on the Ballydoyle jolly with a 1000 Guineas runner-up that can go one better here.

OPERA SINGER

(Ryan Moore/Aidan O’Brien)

A five-length win in the Group 1 Prix Marcel-Boussac at the end of last season at Longchamp propelled Opera Singer into the limelight and she was touted as one of the stars of the Aidan O’Brien juvenile team. However, she could only finish in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh on her first run this season and she will be looking to improve on that effort when she heads to Royal Ascot for the Coronation Stakes. The Justify filly should improve for the better ground, but she does head in a short favourite for this event.

RAMATUELLE

(Oisin Murphy/Christopher Head)

A multiple Group winner as a two-year-old, Ramatuelle has failed to get her head in front this season, but Christopher Head’s filly has shown to be a real model of consistency. She was certainly given a questionable ride in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, where she kicked for home a long way out, but got swallowed up in the closing stages to finish third. Oisin Murphy is a clear positive and he has already tasted victory this campaign, so this French raider has to be a leading contender.

ELMALKA

(James Doyle/Roger Varian)

Elmalka took a huge step forward having finished third in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury by landing a fine win in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Roger Varian’s Classic winner is now bidding for back-to-back Group 1 wins and she has proven she can deliver on the big stage. Everything may have fallen right for her that day, so she will need to improve to play a notable role, but she’s all class and is clearly progressing the right way.

THE FIELD

There’s a whole host of clues available from the 1000 Guineas form line and Donnacha O’Brien’s Porta Fortuna ran a mighty race at Newmarket to finish second. The Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes is all about speed, but she seemed to see out the mile well that day at Flat HQ and with the ground likely to suit her then she has to be on the vicinity again.

A shock 33/1 winner of the French 1000 Guineas, Rouhiya is another contender coming over from France for this event and she will be looking to show that Classic win wasn’t a fluke, while the likes of Content and Skellet have some decent form in the book, but will need to post career bests to land the prize.

VERDICT

Opera Singer is a class act and the better ground should help her deliver her best form in the Coronation Stakes, but at the prices she’s worth taking on. Second in the 1000 Guineas, PORTA FORTUNA already has a Royal Ascot win to her name having landed the Albany Stakes last season and a return to Berkshire could see her shine once again and she can outpace her rivals to beat Opera Singer, with Ramatuelle back in third..
