Scott Dixon’s six-time Fibresand winner had been frustrating supporters consistently since claiming his fifth 5f victory last March but bounced back in some style over 6f a week ago. Out of today’s number five berth, Crosse Fire was smartly away and whenever asked to give more, responded gamely to win with authority despite hanging towards the far rail.
Blessed with plenty of speed, the selection’s previous wins had all been recorded over today's course and distance and he should have no problems returning to the minimum trip.
At the same venue, BRIGADOON (Southwell, 2.10) and TOPMEUP (Southwell, nb, 5.35) can bookend the card with victories. The former recorded his first Southwell win just six days ago and did so by a very easy 10 lengths. Always travelling well, he eased clear 2f out and left the field trailing. It will be a disappointment if the veteran cannot follow up.
Topmeup looked to be heading for victory here 12 days ago but ran out of steam late on and finished third. That was a valiant effort after 128 days off and she’ll be straighter for the exertions.
