Excellent Review

2.55 Ayr – FIRST IMPRESSION (1pt win – 9/2 generally)

FIRST IMPRESSION is typically a rock-solid option at this Ayr venue and the return to the flat, having run with extreme credit even over hurdles here, emphasizes how much he likes this Scottish track. His flat-form figures here read 1411, which twice includes the defeat of Glasses Up – who is not the same horse as he once was – and an excellent fourth in the Class 2 0-100 Kilkerran Cup when finishing strongest of all. I am happy to forgive his last two runs on the flat, given they have come on the AW surface, for which he is 0-4. His latest run in this sphere was a fifth in a Class 3 at Nottingham in October when doing too much on the front end and setting it up for those ridden with patience (those that remember we won the race with 15/2 NAP Mr Alan). This is a drop back in grade into Class 4 company for which his record reads 1371 – the third was at York when four lengths clear of today’s favourite Highwaygrey, and today he has optimal conditions with the overnight rain ensuring any firm will be out of the going description by the morning. He should be the clear favourite, but the recency bias of Highway Grey’s running on third at York nine days ago has seen the market move in that one’s favour.

6.45 Windsor – NOBLE MASQUERADE (2pt win – 10/3 generally)

The time to catch NOBLE MASQUERADE is fresh, and the booking of William Buick suggests that Eve Johnson Houghton has this horse ready to roll in a bid for repeat wins in this contest (21% strike rate together). He was an authoritative winner of this contest last term, and on seasonal return the year before, he should have won at Nottingham but was continuously denied a clear passage, and he was a big eye-catcher when he made his debut at this venue. I am happy to forgive his two runs at Newmarket last term (not handling the undulations), and he outran his huge 50/1 odds sandwiched between those in a visor when beaten three lengths here at Windsor by one that is now rated 13 pounds higher in the handicap. The blinkers are on today, and soft ground should pose no issue, having finished a good second doing best of those from off the pace at Sandown on his only attempt on a slow surface. His record at this venue reads 41152, and he makes the most appeal in this small-field contest.
