2.48 Ayr – Faylaq (1pt win – 20/1 generally)

This is a trappy race, and there’s plenty to like about Chance, who has made the long journey to Ayr today for his trainer, who has just one runner. Still, he has never convinced over this trip and should he underperform; this is wide open. FAYLAQ was behind Glasses Up here on his penultimate start, but that was over 1m5f, and he made a menacing move from the rear of the field only to fail to see out the trip off a slow pace. He drops back in distance today and sees the cheek-pieces return for the first time since a two-length defeat in the Zetland Gold Cup when rated 105 in May last term. He has rapidly fallen in the ratings, and this trip is well worth a try. He is no back number.

14.48 Fergie Happel Memorial Handicap

3.18 Ayr – Judgment Call (1pt win – 7/2 bet365 & William Hill, 10/3 generally)

JUDGMENT CALL has been knocking on the door and found a Class 4 0-80 all too much for him seven days ago, but he did travel through the contest like one ahead of the handicapper. Today’s drop back into a Class 6 over this seven-furlong trip could be just what the doctor ordered, and he gets the vote under Paul Mulrennan to finally get off the mark in this weak contest.

15.18 Scottish Sun Ladies Night On Saturday Handicap
3rd 4/1

3.55 Ripon – Mr Carpenter (1pt win – 16/1 generally)

This looks tricky, but it might be worth taking a small chance on MR CARPENTER, who put in a no-show at Hamilton but didn’t shape at all badly from the rear of the 14-runner field after being slowly away. It paid to be on the pace that day, and jockey bookings suggested he would need the run after 12 months off the track, so it’s best not to take that form too literally. He rounded off last year with a good eighth in the Jovick Handicap at York and was only narrowly denied by Live Your Dream at Newcastle on his start prior. This is a drop into calmer waters today, and the return of Duran Fentiman is a positive. He has had a further 85 days off the track, but he has a good record off a break, and his trainer has won the last two runnings of this race, so it’s likely it has been a target. He remains fairly treated, and this is not a strong contest, and with his two best performances of his career coming over this distance from only two attempts, he is worth chancing.

15.55 Billy Nevett Memorial Handicap
6th 12/1
