Excellent Review

2.05 Haydock – GREEN BOOK (1pt win – 4/1 William Hill, 3/1 888, 11/4 generally)

GREEN BOOK disappointed at this meeting 12 months ago, but the combination of heavy ground and 3m just didn’t suit. That’s worth forgiving, given how much he had in hand at Sandown earlier this month when scoring over Call Me Lord, and that was a far stronger contest than this. He is selected to go in again despite having to give away a penalty.

This race is thin on the ground, with Erne River as a suspect stayer, while Ashtown Lad should have put to bed a weaker Warwick contest last time. Itchy Feet – a winner for this column last time out – was well positioned in a race that clocked a 9-second faster second circuit suggests the emphasis was on speed, not stamina – so he still has that to prove for all this won’t be run at a scorching clip. Wakool ran with credit at Musselburgh and is really consistent, and the small field seems to be his bag. He could easily run into the frame here, but it would be disappointing if Green Book didn’t have more to offer, being just a six-year-old and his fifth in the Albert Bartlett is the strongest form on offer.

2.25 Ascot – DORKING LAD (1pt win – 25/1 Bet365, 14/1 generally)

DORKING LAD is worth a straight win interest in this highly competitive contest. He unseated at the first at Kempton eight days ago, and while I would prefer to be backing him at that track, he has gone missed by the market here.

He is unexposed over 3m and had been crying out for a further step up in distance. He was a very good winner on his penultimate start at the above-mentioned Kempton and chased home the very well-handicapped pair Haddex Des Obeaux, and Frere D’Armes back in November and the former is now 20lbs higher while the winner is 16lbs higher. He is only four pounds higher and shaped like a stiffer test of stamina would suit when running on strongly at the death.

His rider claims five pounds off his back today, and he looks well treated. His ideal conditions are a right-handed track and good ground, and with this step up in distance surely bringing about further improvement, he gets the vote.

2.32 Wincanton – FLAGRANT DELITIEP (1pt win – 4/1 Will Hill, 11/4 generally)

FLAGRANT DELITIEP gets the services of the excellent Freddie Gordon, who claims seven off his back which makes him look particularly well-treated. He returns to the scene of his last win, and his form figures at this venue read 12222124, but interestingly outside of this venue, he has never run a good race until the turn of the year. From the start of the season until the end of December, his form figures read 644PUPU65498. From January onwards, they read 312221223.

He is now on a career-low rating for this time of year, having dropped from a peak of 131 to this 123 (not including the claim) and is worth chancing on the back of a short break.

3.00 Ascot – PETIT TONNERRE (0.5pt e/w – 14/1 Paddy Power/Betfair, 12/1 generally) + DJELO (1pt win – 9/1 generally)

PETIT TONNERRE is another that has gone unwanted in the market, but he went off a shorter price for the highly competitive Lanzarote Hurdle, which in turn saw his Newbury conqueror Red Risk finish a narrow short-head second. Red Risk is now rated 11 lbs higher in the handicap, and the selection was attempting to give weight and ground to him when coming from off the pace at Newbury. That performance has not been given enough credit, especially as he was just four-year-old. He is consistent and sure to run his race, and this is weaker on the balance, and it would be no surprise to see him eke out further improvement after just eight starts under rules and five in Britain.

DJELO arrives from a race where it was so slowly run that it was impossible for him to have any involvement from his racing position. Still, he finished very strongly, clocking the best closing sectionals of the day, and he gave the firm impression that he has more to offer. The step back up in trip, given how he hit the line, looks like a good move, and he could yet be very well handicapped after just three outings in Britain.

3.35 Ascot – Shishkin (2pt win – 11/4 generally)

SHISHKIN flopped in the Tingle Creek, but that run did come on the back of surgery and a long break for which much of it would have been recovery time. He has been written off far too quickly and is clearly the class act in this field. It would be highly surprising should he not see out this new distance and perhaps improve for it.

He has always been behind the bridal in his races over 2m hitting flat spots, which means he is going flat out. His stamina has won him plenty of races over 2m, and his Tingle Creek flop is a blessing to force connections up in distance. He is by Sholokov, who has produced plenty of stayers, including the likes of Don Cossack, and he did win the Sidney Banks over 2m3 1/2f over hurdles. This distance is not the question in my mind it’s his well-being, but I am willing to take a chance and lap the 11/4 up.

Fakir D’oudaires would have been well held last time, but the fall from Haut En Colours and he fell-in in this race last year over Two For Gold. Pic D’Orhy has been excellently placed in recent outings, and his stamina is not assured for this. The one that will pick up the pieces if Shishkin fails to give his running is Millers Bank, who will appreciate this stamina test. Nicky Henderson has also given Shishkin a wind op and a first-time tongue tie, for which he has a fantastic record when doing so. Take the chance.
