Excellent Review

1.05 Sandown – DANCILA (0.5pt E/W – 20/1 generally)

Despite the smaller field and the inexperience of DANCILA he clocked a very useful time figure when scoring in the Scottish Supreme Novice Hurdle on debut – more than five seconds quicker (20 lengths) than the Listed Juvenile winner Afadil who is now rated 128. He did that effortlessly and easily clocked the fastest 2m circuit time on the card. He was beaten at Taunton but was tenderly handled and then never put in the race at Huntingdon with Paddy Brennan clearly riding him with handicaps in mind. This opening rating of 120 on the evidence of his three runs to date looks very lenient – particularly on his flat rating of 90. The tongue tie goes on for the first time, and Fergal O’Brien has a 21% strike rate at Sandown, so he looks worth chancing in a valuable race with an open feel. Our recent winner, Under Control, certainly has more to offer and is feared, but five and six places are up for grabs.

bet365 Novices’ Championship Final Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)

2.50 Sandown – HEWICK *NAP* (4pt win – 6/4 generally)

HEWICK is the day’s best bet and is 12 lbs clear on ratings, such as the penalty system in this race. He has recorded RPRs of 160 plus in his last four starts, and his latest, although failing to complete, would have been an excellent 5th at worst in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He will get his favoured ground, and he recorded an emphatic win on this card last year. He is surely better than these – particularly right-handed – for which his form figures read 112122 since September 2021, and there are no negatives. I have him more of a 10/11 chance, so anything bigger than evens is acceptable.

bet365 Oaksey Chase (Grade 2) (For The Menorah Challenge Trophy) (GBB Race)

3.05 Leicester – DASHING ROGER (1pt win – 33/1 generally)

It takes a leap of faith to back DASHING ROGER, but this looks ripe for an upset, and he has become well-handicapped after a season in the wilderness. He returns on a good mark of 88 and crucially is now in field size smaller than 10 – for which all of his wins have come. Interestingly, when encountering a small field and soft ground, his record reads 11223. His career-best performance came at this venue over course and distance, and he looks worth chancing and huge odds. Take no less than 25/1.

Madri Excepcional King Richard III Cup Handicap

3.45 Haydock – BOARDMAN (2pt win – 13/2 BetVictor, 6/1 generally)

All of BOARDMAN‘s wins have come around a bend; even in France, his win came at Saint-Cloud on the round mile. He was a big eye-catcher at Wolverhampton in the Lincoln trial before running no race in the Lincoln propper at Doncaster. However, that straight track doesn’t suit, and he has now confirmed that with his second poor performance there. He tends to go well at this time of year, having won this race last term, and he should boast an even better record at this venue than 2-4 50% but for a denied run on his latest run here. He is handicapped to have a say today and should prove tough to beat.

4.00 Sandown – GOSHEN (2pt win – 10/3 William Hill, 3/1 generally)

GOSHEN looks good value here, and the market seeingly has forgotten how good this horse can be under the right conditions. The ground could do with being on the softer side, but he likes this venue with a 2-2 100% record with wins coming by 15 and 34 lengths, and it’s blindingly obvious that he needs a right-handed track with form figures of 21111745111 over hurdles and outside of Grade 1 company 11134111. There is a lack of pace in this contest also, so he could easily be the one to dictate the race from the front. He doesn’t come off best at the weights, but Thyme Hill returns from fences, and Call Me Lord’s best days are behind him. Knappers Hill surely doesn’t want this trip, so Theatre Glory could be the biggest threat.

bet365 Select Hurdle (Grade 2) (GBB Race)

4.35 Sandown – SAMARRIVE (1pt win – 5/1 generally)

Iceo is the choice of Harry Cobden, but SAMARRIVE likes it here and dotted up in this race last year and is fairly handicapped thanks to Freddie Gingell’s claim of seven pounds. He is now 2-3 at this venue, and both of his wins in the month of April have been emphatic ones, so this could be the time of year to catch him. He could yet be anything after just ten runs under rules and conditions should be right up his street.
