Daryl Carter’s Best Bets (Saturday, May 14th)

Daryl Carter, GG Tipster

It’s Lockinge day at Newbury on Saturday, but Daryl Carter is looking around the grounds for profit to start the weekend. He has seven selections from Newbury, Newmarket and Thirsk, alongside Bet365‘s new customer offer of Bet £10, Get £50 In Free Bets.

Odds correct at time of publishing.

POST IMPRESSIONIST – 1.50 Newmarket (1pt win 9/2 Boylesports, 4/1 generally)

A good race this, and it may be the case that this track doesn’t suit POST IMPRESSIONIST, but he has looked well above average in two starts to date for his powerful yard, and he is only going to improve for this step up in trip. This is a good race with Austrian Theory setting the standard, but it’s highly likely something can improve past that one. He is open to significant improvement given his size and scope, and he was undone by his racing position at Nottingham when held up off a very slow pace behind a 90 rated winner who dictated. He was the only horse to come from the rear of the field and stuck to the task very strongly. That was an excellent debut, and then he turned his Ayr assignment into a procession. This is a bigger test for him today, and Zain Sarinda undoubtedly sets the form standard, but there is an air of quality about this horse.

FOXES TALES – 2.10 Newbury (1pt win 7/2 generally)

This can go to FOXES TALES, who is sure to build on his reappearance run at Sandown when touched off by the very useful Mostahdaf. He can easily be forgiven for his run at Ascot in Group 1 company at the back end of last season when tried in first-time blinkers, but his penultimate effort, when beaten a neck by Solid Stone with today’s rival Ilaraab and the smart Al Asay in behind, sets a good standard. He has an excellent attitude, and this extra distance could bring about improvement given the stamina he has shown over 1m2f on soft ground (2/2).

POCKET THE PROFIT – 2.25 Newmarket (1pt e/w 10/1 Bet365, Hills 9/1 generally)

POCKET THE PROFIT was undone by the tight Chester track, being held up at the rear of the field and outpaced. The return to Newmarket is not ideal either (I want him on a flat track), but it’s more conventional than his latest venue. He looks wildly over-priced here on the balance of his form, and he did well to finish only beaten five lengths at Chester. We know he is well-treated, so in the hope that Hector Crouch tries to make more use of him early on, he is worth sticking with.

ISRAR – 14.45 Newbury (1pt win 9/2 Ladbrokes, Hills, Coral, 4/1 generally)

There was a lot to like about ISRAR‘s performance at Newmarket on seasonal return, and considering he looked in desperate need of the run, he should come forward a good deal from that effort. He hated the Newmarket undulations looking all at sea, but Jim Crowley was easy enough on him to suggest there would be plenty of better days ahead. That line of form is likely to work out well, and he has excuses for his defeat at Salisbury on the second start last term when hemmed in against the rail off a steady pace with the winner having the run of things upfront. Back on a flat track today, he could prove well ahead of his mark with a strong pace to aim at. I have had a small, each way saver on Inverness and Surrey Mist is feared, but this well-bred sort should go on to bigger and better things.

TINTO – 4.05 Thirsk (1pt win 6/1 Bet365, 9/2 Hills)

TINTO has been in better form than his figures suggest over the last 12 months but has fallen in the handicap to a workable mark of 87 and meets a few rivals with something to prove today. He was a big eye-catcher on seasonal return over course and distance when denied a clear run for much of the race. That form is working out well. The winner went close at York behind our selection Dakota Gold while the runner-up scored next time out. That was an encouraging run from a yard where horses have improved for their first outing of the season, and that was the longest break he has had between seasons by quite some margin. He is entitled to strip fitter today and hasn’t had many opportunities at this level over 6f. He has had four runs at Class 3 level over this distance since 2019 with form figures of 6 (latest), 9 (off 95 at Ascot, basically a Class 2), 2 (Off 94 behind Edraak now rated 12lbs higher), 1. There’s good reason to think he will improve off the back of this first start for his new yard and is 15lbs better off with Staxton for their meeting when the selection came out on top at Newmarket.

NORTHERN EXPRESS – 16:40 Thirsk (1pt win 7/2 generally)

Boardman is a tempting proposition, but nobody missed his good run at Chester from a wide draw, and this quick turnaround is an unknown (strangely has run poorly on the back of Chester efforts twice. The same applies to Cold Stare, who has an excellent record fresh. I want to take a chance with NORTHERN EXPRESS using the same Michael Dods second time out angle. He ran a blinder at Musselburgh after being slowly away and denied a clear run for much of the race before finishing with a strong flurry. That signalled he was about to return to form, and he had a progressive profile in the right circumstances last term. Paul Mulrennan has an excellent record on this horse with form figures of 13172 outside of his reappearance runs, but he has finished a creditable third and second when reappearing under this rider. He has more to offer.

SINJAARI – 5.04 Newbury – (2pt win 11/2 generally)

This can go to SINJAARI, who is a horse to back when fresh with form figures of 2012 in far more competitive races than this. He went close off 105 on his reappearance for this yard at York last August when touched off by a neck by the very smart Migration giving him two pounds. There’s nothing of the calibre of that horse in this field today, and on his last visit to Newbury, he was touched off on this card back in 2019 by the excellent Headman. Stuck between a rock and a hard place for new connections, it’s highly unlikely they will waste this seasonal return by using it as a prep run. The favourite Notre Belle Bete looks weighted to his best, and five of his rivals make their seasonal return – all having needed the run in the past. Oh This Is Us could prove the biggest danger, but he has failed to shine here on more than one occasion.
