2.55 Deauville – Perfect Power (1pt win – 4/1 bet365)

We jumped off PERFECT POWER at Newmarket when the ground was far too quick for him, but it’s highly likely to be slower here in France, and the extra 1/2 a furlong looks tailor-made for him. There’s going to be a furious pace on here, and he is drawn well in stall 10.

He remains a horse on a steep upward curve and is well worth forgiving the one run at Newmarket. He put in arguably a career-best effort when travelling here last season when winning the Prix Morny, and he can score again across the water.

4.45 Haydock – Showtime Mahomes (1pt win – 14/1 Paddy Power, Betfair, Coral)

This is not a strong race, so it may pay to take a chance on SHOWTIME MAHOMES bouncing back to form in these calmer waters. He drops into a Class 4 after a no-show the last twice in very deep handicaps. Still, his York win is fresh in the memory, and that race threw up loads of winners.

He wasn’t entire poor on his latest outing at Newmarket, running on strongly from the rear of the field, and he has bounced back from lesser efforts in the past.

515 Haydock – Rich King (1pt win – 15/2 generally)

515 Haydock – Sucellus (0.5pt each-way – 18/1 Paddy Power, Betfair, 16/1 generally)

American Flag is of interest, but I prefer to back horses a second time after a gelding operation, so it will be interesting to see what he produced today on handicap debut. RICH KING can be forgiven for his effort at Southwell, and he had been progressive before that outing on turf, so it is well worth another chance with his course and distance victory boosted by the runner-up, fourth and sixth. He made a decisive move in that contest from off a steady gallop circling the field, and it marked him down as one to follow, hitting the front on the bridle. He finds plenty for pressure and is not short of speed.

A cover bet is had on course lover SUCELLUS, who has the back form to play a hand here and has ideal conditions and should not be a double-figure price. He has a record of three wins from four starts here, and the other was a second. He should be playing a hand in the finish with a repeat of his latest victory at this venue.

5.45 Haydock – There’s The Door (1pt win – 7/1 generally)

THERE’S THE DOOR took care of two useful rivals at big odds here last month, and the third bolted up yesterday, so she looks one to keep on side in the immediate future. She had plenty in hand at the line and didn’t get an entirely clear passage when hemmed in on the rail.

This doesn’t look stronger than that contest, and given she lacks the size and scope for improvement, 2-3 connections will waste no time in picking up good opportunities.

6.45 Haydock – El Picador (1pt each-way – 18/1 Ladbrokes)

EL PICADOR did remarkably well from the rear of the field in the Cumberland Plate, and I have had this horse down as being desperate for at least 1m6f. That performance, as well as his latest run at York when finishing, strongly would concur with my theory.

He arrives on the back of two career-best efforts, and his double-figure price is insulting. This favourite could easily bolt up from Ireland, but I am happy to take each way chance here.

2.55 Deauville – Perfect Power (1pt win 4/1 bet365)

4.45 Haydock – Showtime Mahomes (1pt win – 14/1 Paddy Power, Betfair, Coral)

515 Haydock – Sucellus (0.5pt each-way – 18/1 Paddy Power, Betfair, 16/1 generally)

5.45 Haydock – There’s The Door (1pt win – 7/1 generally)

6.45 Haydock – El Picador (1pt each-way – 18/1 Ladbrokes)
