Published: 08:53am – 24th July (Odds correct at time of posting, where available)

2.20 Pontefract – Lenny’s Spirit (1pt win – 7/2 William Hill, 3/1 generally)

LENNY’S SPIRIT is on a steep upward curve for Ed Dunlop and did excellently well from the rear of the field at Epsom when beaten four lengths 17 days ago. He was the only horse of the entire day at Epsom that made up ground from the rear of the field and finished out his race strongly behind a well-handicapped rival who had bounced back to his best two-year-old form with the run of the race. He has gone up 11 pounds in three runs, but the handicapper is yet to get a grip of him on the latest evidence, so he gets the vote of Poets Dawn.

Sky Bet Extra Places Every Day Handicap

2.55 Pontefract – Lightening Company (1pt win – 11/4 bet365 & William Hill, 5/2 generally)

The quick ground may be the reason LIGHTENING COMPANY is a reasonable price for this Class 4 contest, and that means he can’t be ignored. This drop in grade should see him to best effect after some excellent efforts in defeat at Haydock and York, and he is ahead of the assessor under the right conditions. Today’s drop in grade should prove that, and he will prove extremely tough to beat in these calmer waters. Highwaygrey could take a step forward in first-time cheek-pieces back at his favoured course for his trainer, who has won this five times, but the selection is the best horse in the race. Strawman can fight out third.

Pontefract And District Golf Club Ltd Handicap

4.05 Pontefract – Alflalia (1pt win – 5/2 William Hill, 9/4 generally)

Two returning winners of this contest in Marie’s Diamond and Brunch, both of who hold valid claims and 100% course records, but this can go to the three-year-old ALFLAILA, who is improving with every outing and finished with running left behind Mighty Ulysses at Newmarket when unsuited by how the race developed. This stiffer uphill finish should suit him well, and he is getting stacks of weight from his older rivals, putting him clear on weight-adjusted ratings. This is Jim Crowley’s (and William Buick’s) only ride of the day, and the return to a turning track for the first time as a three-year-old should suit the selection who has given the impression he has more to offer yet.
