7.15 Sandown – Cosmic Desert (1pt win 11/4 bet365, Sporting Index, 23/10 SBK)

Frantastic is likely to prove popular here, but this brother to Cracksman will find this ground lively enough on the evidence of his rounded action, and although pitched in deep for the Classic Trial here in April, he has yet to run any time figures or provide any worthwhile form to suggest this mark of 87 is lenient.

He gives the impression he has ability in there somewhere, but he is priced up on potential rather than what he has achieved. The opposition is limited with Conservative another who will find this ground quick enough. His stamina is not guaranteed for this new trip after shaping like a non-stayer at Yarmouth. Stevenson has a good bit to learn and will likely offer pace pressure to Maytree Respite but needs to improve to defy this mark on the balance of his form.

The pace pressure on Maytree Respite could ensure this is run at more of a gallop than COSMIC DESERT’S last assignment when finding the William Muir and Chris Grassick hard to pass. He was very keen in the early stages and pulled his way to the leader’s quatres and needs to settle, but his form in defeat is stronger than the favourites. He should be able to pass Maytree Respite, providing we get a stronger gallop, and he had more in the tank at the line than his rival did 15 days ago. He is extremely frustrating but worth another chance with Buick up.

7.45 Sandown – Global Esteem (1pt win – 4/1 Sky Bet, bet365, 888sport)

Marley Park has taken significant steps forward this season with each run, and he had more left in the locker at his favoured Epsom last time out. He is feared the most, but he does have blowout potential. Instead, I want to be with GLOBAL ESTEEM, who can easily be forgiven his latest run in a Lady Amatuer’s race (she couldn’t ride him) and is better judged on his penultimate start at Ascot when narrowly denied over 1m but doing best of those ridden on the front end of the pace.

That race has worked out well. The other pace-setter Counsel bolted up by six lengths next time, as did the third Hathlool, while the winner and notably the runner-up were eye-catchers at Goodwood. That was a good start for his new yard, but the drop back in trip looks like a positive move with this stiff finish set to suit. His form figures over 7f on good or better ground read 31123, and his sole effort in Class 4 company like today recorded a victory.

He has been here before, back in 2020 with a good second at wild odds of 33/1, and his prominent racing style will be well suited to this track. Majestic Fighter looked all at sea here on his last visit, so I would be wary of backing him returning to this track. Devasboy is interesting with Buick up and will ensure this is a good test.
