Daryl Carter’s Best Bets (Thursday, May 12th)

Dary; Carters Tips

Our man Daryl Carter casts his eye on the second day of York’s Dante Festival where he has four selections across the card. Check out his thoughts below, alongside Sky Bet‘s new customer offer of £30 In Free Bets, when you place any bet.

Odds correct at time of publishing.

ALLIGATOR ALLEY – 1.50 York (2pt each-way, 11/1 Ladbrokes, Coral 9/1 general (4 places))

I was a big fan of ALLIGATOR ALLEY before his absence when with former trainer Joseph O’Brien so it was very encouraging to see him make a bright start for this yard at Wolverhampton on the back of a gelding operation, wind operation and a 533-day break.

He stuck to the task strongly in the closing stages behind a useful AW performer in Tone The Barone, and he shaped as though he would improve a good deal for that outing, and it should have knocked some of the freshness out of him (very keen). He was a non-runner for us at Chester, but today’s scenario looks even better as he returns to the scene of his effortless Listed Rose Stakes.

He was rated 104 as a two-year-old before seemingly having his problems at three and was last seen on turf in the Group 1 Flying Five at the Curragh. Back in a handicap today off a reduced mark of 95 should see him to best effect on this handicap debut. On paper, his Wolverhampton run when in receipt of 2lbs from Highfield Princess (104) – a subsequent winner – and Tone The Baron (105) makes him look well treated, and he is entitled to improve a good deal from that outing.

The double-figure price has nearly gone, but anything 7/1 plus looks good value, and he will prove very strong at the finish.

ISLA KAI – 3.00 York (1pt each-way, 6/1 general)

ISLA KAI ran with extreme credit on seasonal return in a race that I am keen to keep on side, and given he has improved significantly on his figures second time out to win in both 2020 and 2021. He is hard to ignore.

He has an excellent piece of course form when doing well from stall 12 only to be touched off by Rifleman at the Ebor meeting on his final start last year, and a repeat of that effort would surely see him hard to beat. The draw widest of all in 15 is not ideal, but there’s not lots of pace on in this race, and he could easily find himself at the front without using too much energy. He is highly progressive, and there’s more to come from him.

ATASER – 3.00 York (1pt each-way, 20/1 general)

ATASER gets a cover bet in here. He has been underestimated by the market as the almost rank outsider, and he is one of a few here that are unexposed and open to improvement. On the balance of his form a mark of 86 could underestimate him, notably the piece of course form here at York, and while he has clearly had his issues (only run three times since 2020), he shaped with promise on the back of a gelding operation at Newmarket in April, and he is entitled to take a good step forward for that run now back down to a more suitable trip.

The form of his Doncaster fifth in September wouldn’t leave him much to find today, and providing Isla Kai ensures this is a reasonable clip, he will be finishing strongly, so there are plenty of positives for this big priced runner.

MASEKELA – 3.35 York (1pt each-way, 12/1 bet365, William Hill, 888sport)

This is not the deepest Dante Stakes we have seen over the years, and with questions over those towards the top of the market, I am happy to take a punt.

Desert Crown visually looked very good at Nottingham, but this is his reappearance, and there were many in behind him that day ridden underhand and heels with the future in mind, so it’s difficult to get carried away with the performance, and he now needs to back it up. Magisterial offers little value on the bare form, and he will be outstayed here.

El Bodegon is the obvious standard setter with his Group 1 win in France over the now Derby favourite, but stamina is a question for him, as is this quicker surface. Stamina doubts arise with Royal Patronage also, and while the White Wolf looked good at Southwell, this is a different kettle of fish, and his inexperience may show today. Bluegrass has achieved little to date, and this race hasn’t been kind to his master trainer.

A chance is taken with MASEKELA, who shaped as though he would improve for his seasonal return at Newmarket behind one that ran a blinder to finish fourth in the 2,000 Guineas, and he holds the strength in depth to his form to really play a hand in this contest. I wouldn’t be entirely convinced he is in love with Newmarket either, and the return to a flat track for the first time since his Newbury win looks a good move by connections. He should appreciate the step up in the trip, and it’s hard to see him out of the frame.
