Odds correct at time of publishing.

7.10 Newbury – SCARLET DRAGON (1pt win – 11/1 SkyBet, 888 Sport, BetVictor)

SCARLET DRAGON needs to bounce back from two below-par efforts this season, but it’s interesting connections run without the hood for the first time since 2019 and after being dropped ten pounds in two runs this term he is now eligible for this grade. He drops into a 0-85 for the first time since landing back-to-back handicaps at this course in 2016, and this is not a deep contest. He may well be past his prime, but his effort on return at Newmarket when unable to get into a contest from the rear of the field was still one that suggests he holds some ability. He is worth chancing at the forecast odds. Grand Scheme and Frontispiece are feared the most.

7.40 Newbury – STUMBLE FIELD (1pt win – 25/1 Paddy Power, Betfair)

7.40 Newbury – REVERSION (1pt win – 14/1 generally)

STUMBLE FIELD offered plenty of promise at two years last term, chasing home the useful 85-rated Khanjar before showing up really well in a hot Newmarket Auction race. Those two runs and her narrow Kempton defeat to the 90-rated Ileach mathan suggested she was in desperate need of seven furlongs. It was a satisfactory return to action at Lingfield in April for all it was a stop-start gallop, and it simply didn’t suit her. She was never travelling at Newmarket when drawn on the wing and at the rear of a steadily run affair, so that effort is easily overlooked. Switched back to a more conventional track, it might pay to give her another chance to build on the promise she showed last term off what looks a workable handicap mark in a poor race at double-figure odds.

The other horse overlooked by this market is REVERSION, who was far better than the bare result on seasonal return at Sandown when behind today’s market leader Stockpyle when 9th of 11. He was inconvenienced by his racing position at the rear of the field when the above-mentioned and co dictated the race from the front. He made stealthy headway to run on strongly in the closing stages, and he is entitled to improve on the back of that effort which came after 220 days off and a gelding operation. He is another that showed promise over a trip likely to prove too short as a two-year-old.

8.10 Newbury – TOUCHWOOD (2pt win – 5/2 bet365, William Hill, BetVictor)

There’s more to come from TOUCHWOOD, who was unlucky not to score when odds-on at Brighton, having been inconvenienced by the winner and finishing with running left. He was undone by the drop back to 6f at Lingfield on his penultimate start, but that track is hardly an adequate stamina test for him, and the return to a more conventional track with a long home straight will almost certainly see him to the best effect. He is on the upgrade, and this is a lesser contest than he has been in this term.
