2.05 Cheltenham – BOOMBAWN (1pt win – 9/1 888Sports, 17/2 generally)

BOOMBAWN looks fairly treated on the balance of her form, and she wasn’t quite right on her two starts in November. Those can be forgiven now approaching the spring, where she came good last season with a Ffos Las victory and a good second at Sandown behind Knappers Hill. She had some tough tasks as a Novice, but this step up in distance is long overdue, particularly on the evidence of her Huntingdon second to Impulsive One, where she hit a flat spot and stayed on again. The drying ground and stiff finish at this track should suit her, and she has strong claims off this rating of 128 if taking another step forward for the new distance.

Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)

2.25 Newmarket – PROBE (2pt win – 11/2 Bet365, 5/1 generally) + EQUIANO SPRINGS (0.5pt E/W – 20/1 Bet365 + Ladbrokes, 18/1 generally)

PROBE won with any amount in hand dropped to six furlongs at Wolverhampton last time for new connections, and this once promising Dermot Weld-trained Juddmonte-owned son of Kingman could just be ready to fulfil that promise over this new trip. He travelled kindly in the first-time hood on the back of a 231 days break and is entitled to come on for that run. He has 7f soft-ground winning form in Ireland, and he remains completely unexposed. Up six pounds, he could have plenty more to offer – particularly with a fitness edge over many of his rivals.

If you were just to back EQUIANO SPRINGS at Newmarket over six furlongs (as advised last season), you would have seen form figures of 11111. Now today’s scenario may not be ideal (soft ground and first time out), but he has gone well fresh previously, and he is drawn favourable, and his performances here have been so far clear of anything else that he may have been underestimated despite the rise in grade. Have a small each-way cover on him.

Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap

3.00 Newmarket – BLANCHLAND *NAP* (2pt win – 5/1 generally)

The market has underestimated the strength of the time figure the Group 3 Zetland Stakes recorded back in October, and with that race working out well in the main, BLANCHLAND – who overcame inexperience and trouble in the running – can get the better of the Godolphin pair. He took a huge stride forward from Newcastle to this venue last season, going from a smooth Maiden victory to his Group effort. There’s surely more to come this season, and he looks good value to get off to a winning start. Regal Honour is feared most.

bet365 Feilden Stakes (Listed Race)

3.15 Cheltenham – RED DIRT ROAD (1pt E/W – 8/1 888Sport, 7/1 generally)

The future looks very bright for a handful of these, including the favourite, The Carpenter. He has been well-found in the market. It might be worth chancing RED DIRT ROAD, who arrives on an upward curve also and will surely improve for this move up in trip after an emphatic Exeter success. He recorded an excellent time figure there – well clear of anything else on the card – and surely a distance of 2m is the bare minimum of what he wants. His point-to-point victory over the smart Corbetts Cross catches the eye, and he has offered tremendous promise and improvement in three starts this season. That point-to-point has worked out well. In sixth was Thomas Mor, who is rated 142 (beaten 14 lengths), and there’s more to come from the selection as his stamina is brought out. Pikar is respected, and I have had a small cover.
